People think that the only reason people pick high tier characters is because they're high tier. By picking a low-tier character, you're showing that you actually like the character you're playing. While there are for sure people that only choose the best characters because they're high-tier, the vast majority of pro players enjoy the playstyle of their mains. If you hate a character you're unlikely to get good.

Theres nothing fishy. Wolf is just popular right now. Most of these low level wolfs are getting blown the fuck out by better players.
Literal some character was going to top play and results at some point. You can't communistically distribute results and hope everyone gets perfect equality. Considering out of all the characters that could have ended up on top, Wolf is a fundamentals character who doesn't drag out games, so it's hard to be mad at that outcome.

Most top Smash players have been playing these games since the Melee/Brawl days. Spacies and Marths will always be popular to play amongst all levels of play because they have solid, fun playstyles and there's always at least 1 or 2 of them top tier in every Smash game.
I think the point of contention is that this early one character is by far and away shaping the meta in a game with 70+ characters. Even fucking brawl had a pretty diverse first 2 months. Robs and g&ws were winning along with eternal top tier snake and mk was just starting to blip on the radar

People are results obsessed, even casual players. This narrative that shitposters put out(who probably don't even play Smash) that your average Smash player plays Smash like a glorified 2D Candyland where people randomly call Go Fish is a fiction. Even casual video gamers who don't want to input much time into their games care about what the best weapons/characters/strategies are in their games, because everybody wants to win to some extent. Especially with the dedicated following of Smash where everyone mulls over every aspect of it's design more than they did 20 years ago. That means within hours of Ultimate's release nearly everyone was mining as fast as possible for the best strategies and best characters.
It was only a matter of months before people started putting 2 and 2 together. It is a utopian fantasy that everyone was going to flail in equality for at least a year as everyone's favorite felt validated. This is why Sakurai's design philosophy is a cancer and why his Maoist attempt at outcome equality in Brawl was still a failure. People want to win, and Smash is a familiar game type. 2 months is about right for people to start figuring things out.
