What exactly is the problem with gaming laptops?

Outperformed by desktops in every aspect.

The price, and how underpowered they are.

From what I hear, Over-heating and lack of ability to upgrade.
I wouldn't be surprised if like-to-like performance was lower over time but I haven't seen or heard that.

The fact you have to plug a mouse, monitor and power cable into them to make them semi-usable.

Heat. They need to make them so they have semi decent cooling systems, which they don’t.

Higher price for similar performance
Can't upgrade

The only pros are that if you've only got limited space in your NEET dwellings, they're pretty good. But then again, can you afford to drop 2K on a machine if you live in such cramped quarters?

I have never had a laptop not develop serious issues after 3 years, and I take good care of them. They intentionally mad those things to fall apart after 3 years so you'll buy a new one. Just buy a desktop PC and a Switch it you're looking for mobile gaming.

Add much shorter life expectancy to the list.

issues with heat and hardware support. things tend to go wrong and if your warranty is out you are shit out of luck. i own one and if i dont run intel xtu i throttle bc of heat with my i7 7700hq

30 minute battery life and massive size, they are only marginally more portable than actual desktops.

The thinking I suppose is: It's everything in a neat little package, screen, keyboard, all I need, that's handy! I'll buy that.
But it's still a gpu, cpu, keyboard, screen, ram build in too cramped a space (which actually costs more money), which (be honest) will sit on a desk anyways
For PC- gaming, it's a retarded solution, but I do see the appeal to casuals, if you don't think things through too much. It's 'easier'.

I bring it with me when I travel. Play on the plane or when I’m at the hotel room and don’t wanna go out

You have to consider that most of the time you get somewhat underpowered hardware for a relatively high price point.
Cooling can definitely be an issue as well since most brands cannot into any kind of proper cooling. And havind a battery is meaningless since who uses a gayman laptop on the go.

With al that said, when you have limited space and you are not aiming for anything higher than 1080/60fps they are perfectly fine. Even under tropical conditions with a bit of external cooling.
Had mine for around six years now, its still working fine. The screen hinges are fucked but since I dont ever move it its a non issue.
Obviously its showing its age, particularly since the hardware was not the best at the time.

Price, thermals, upgradability/ease of access, battery life, weight, build quality.

>What exactly is the problem with gaming laptops?
Price, heat, power, viewing angles, battery life.
The ONLY reason to buy one is if you NEED to be able to take it lots of different places.

based autistic shitter

if you have to travel for work they're awesome
just gotta get one that doesn't look ridiculous
god bless msi

Because you're paying more money for worse hardware and to top it off: forgoing the most important aspect of PC gaming - the ability to upgrade your rig.
I also find it hard to believe that people actually *game* on gaming laptops, as in play games regular modern laptops with decent integrated gpus can't handle. I can't imagine wanting to play some AAA cinematic-fest on the fucking train.

They've gotten much better in the last couple years. They're still weaker and more expensive than a desktop, but nowhere near the levels they were at just 5 years ago. The performance difference in a GPU from nvidia's 10xx series between laptop and desktop models was like 10%, i think? Really not bad taking the form factor into account.
Of course you also have to take the impact heating causes to performance into account and whatnot, but nowadays, laptops are an ok solution for gaming if you do need to move a bunch with your machine. Outside that, desktops are still the way to go since you get so much more bang for the buck, but gayming laptops aren't just a joke anymore at least.

twice the price you'd pay for a normal gaymen rig, shit battery life, usually shit build quality, and weigh a ton to boot

holy based

Why would you ever need an excuse to play a pc game on the go? The only excuse I can see is if you game and you also travel a lot which is no one on this board.

They serve a purpose.
I've been all over the country over the past few years and if I had to carry around a desktop it would have been a ton of work and not worth the effort. Now that I'm in one place for the foreseeable future I'm looking into getting a desktop again. It's been nice to play modern games at 60 frames on high/ultra and was worth the investment imo.

I'm on a Razer Blade 2018 and sure, I'm financing a $2,000 laptop that could have been a GTX1080 desktop.

But I have a very busy, on-the-go job and I needed a computer that could work for that AND do gaming if I wanted to do it.

It was either going to be this or the MacBook Pro and there's no way that's going to happen.

i had a friend who would go to me to validate his tech purchases and the excuse he gave me for not getting a gaymen laptop over a desktop is because he doesn't have any space in his apartment for one

I just bought an MSI GL73 (retails for ~1500$ CAD) with a GTX 1050 and an i7-8750 in it off a dad on Letgo for 300$ CAD. Guy was selling it because his kid was misbehaving and just wanted it gone. Haggled it down from 350$ because he didn't know the model number or specs or anything, he didn't care, he just wanted his kid to learn a lesson. I have no idea what the kid did, but he was in the van there when he was selling it too, bawling his eyes out and I didn't feel an ounce of guilt. Didn't even format the drive before selling it, there was Roblox and shit on it. Took it to Memory Express to have the serial number checked out to make sure it wasn't stolen - it wasn't, and it was actually bought at that store a few months ago, still has almost a full year of warranty on it. Slapped an m.2 drive in this bitch and it runs like a dream. Truly the holy grail of Letgo finds for me so far.

>The only pros are that if you've only got limited space in your NEET dwellings
I've lived in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment and still I can't imagine the kind of a broom closet apartment that can't facilitate a small desk with a pc and a monitor.

Which m.2 drive did you buy user?

Difficult/impossible to upgrade the main components aside from hard drives & RAM, plus with heating issues which can damage the internal parts. In addition to being very pricey.
They have gotten better though, the specs are more reasonable for their price (but still kinda overpriced) and give it a few more years and they'll probably be seen as a more viable option.
If you really have to move places constantly and really want to play games on the go, it's not as a bad as a choice it was a few years ago. Really think it through though.
If you're not gonna be traveling around a lot, just building your own is better. Prebuilts are still kinda shit because they cut a lot of corners a lot because the market for those are people who don't really know specs that well.

>$300
Fucking hell, that's nice.

They're okay if you get one of the actual good ones and you REALLY need the portability, but desktop computers have more power thanks to less throttling and cost less.

Somewhat unrelated, PC building simulator any good for teaching a normalfag how to build a computer? A friend of mine wants to learn how to do it but I've been pretty busy, so I don't really have that much time to show him, so I'm wondering if that game will make a good visual tool.

500GB WD Black!

I know right, the guys at the MemEx were fucking ROLLING. Runs stuff solidly at a mix of medium and high settings. Very happy, considering I just sold my old-ass outdated gaming laptop to help pay for an engagement ring. New laptops are so nice! Honestly, this runs almost as well as my desktop.

I mean, it definitely won't hurt to get familiarized with the parts, what they look like, where they go, what to expect, etc.

Overpriced, and they usually perform terrible due to shitty thermals. Either you get a thin gaming laptop so you can be portable, in which case you get

Just tell him to look up some tutorials on youtube, there’s like a million good resources

>Overpriced
>Underpowered

>Small Screen

Friend sold me his origin pc evo 15s with i7, gtx 1060, 2tb drive, 16gb ram for $400

send him the Polygon build guide and laugh when his house burns down

They used to be a joke but they have gotten far better in recent years due to advancements in performance per watt.

Cost twice as much for the same performance and cannot be upgraded or serviced in some situations without buying OEM parts.

Say what you will but in comfy terms nothing beats a laptop + pad + bed.

spill wine on the keyboard and it's dead.

Everything

>under-powered
>over-priced

some hidden force makes them all look ugly like this

throttling. you pay for full performance on paper, but in reality you receive only 50-60% of it

Absolutely this.the most important reason to own a laptop and am never switching to desktop, can't even imagine fapping otherwise

Attached: 1543347578552.jpg (864x861, 38K)

battery dies after 2 years. Thats gonna cost ya.
monitors are sub par so you have to upgrade them. Thats gonna cost ya.
Cleaning jizz off of monitor or keyboard. Thats free.
Buying a decent mouse to replace the shitty mousepad. Thats gonna cost ya.
High end laptop speakers need to be replaced with high end headphones. Thats gonna cost ya.
Power supply or cables go bad after 2 years. Thats gonna cost ya.
Depending on brand you'll have to void the warranty to open up the laptop and clean it out.
Drop that gaming laptop once and its gone for good.
The Heat from the gpu destroys other components.
You'll have to keep that gaming laptop plugged into get any performance otherwise they're made to go into power savings mode which will cut your fps by 80%.
Hope you're happy with your purchase retard.

If you travel a fair amount, and have money to burn, they're worth it. I fly and hotel a lot and not having a gaming laptop would mean either not playing games, having a really limited selection by several generations on a regular laptop (not powerful enough) or just not gaming.

They're not worth it otherwise for the technical/financial reasons brought up repeatedly.

>buying Laptop for gaming
Big yikes. The only thing you should look for is how durable it is and if you can use it for a full workday.
Playing old emulators on Laptops is ok.
