The most bizarre thing about Trish is how she's become a sort of memorial to Sparda. Her primary weapons, Sparda, Luce and Umbra, are all weapons that were owned by Sparda. So as a result, Trish's identity is basically: A demon created by Sparda's archnemesis and former boss who uses Sparda's weapons and works for Sparda's son. She has no actual direct connection to Sparda, she just uses his shit and works for his kid.

Literally the entire reason she became this way was due to DMC2, where she was a bonus unlockable character. There, she used weapons unique to LDK Dante from DMC1, Sparda, Luce and Umbra (Sparda being a weapon that Dante can use in any mode). The point of her character here was to be a wholesale reference to DMC1. But later games in which she became playable (MvC3, DMC4SE) continued to use these weapons for her because of sheer laziness. There's literally no fucking reason why Trish would even HAVE Luce and Umbra, it was LITERALLY just a reference to the first game that wasn't meant to be taken seriously. But it happened, and now they've become a solidified part of her identity.

I actually liked Trish quite a bit, sure she was basically "Dante combos reworked" the character but they came together quite nicely and I like lightning based skills. Miss Alastor.

Lady on the other hand was just extremely uninteresting gun spam without any good flow to her. It didn't help that the damage numbers were bizarre, her gun stinger with the shotgun did a million times more damage than most other moves for example.

Vergil is clearly the most fun of the 4SE extras but also ridiculously OP to such an insane degree you basically have to play hell and hell to not have a walk in the park, he does so much damage and he has so many movement options, lots of range to his melee attacks, many ranged options and a screen clearing attack.

I agree Proto-Nero is the best outfit but I like 5Nero's outfit better than default 4Nero. I'm not really fan of the hoodie/shirt thing under his jacket. His jacket is cool but other than that the outfit is pretty meh. I think it's cool. The new move seems much better then Dreadnaught was mechanics wise. Using one bar of rage and going into a counter stance so that you blast anything that hits you. Seems much better. Will make learning timings on when things hit you much easier and will ease new players into Royal Guard much easier.

Dreadnaught was always such a bizarre mechanic to me. Why would giving the player a few moments of invulnerability be a good reward for already being good enough that you can perfectly guard shit to fill the meter. I do like the design though.

It's more that Dreadnaught gives you hyper armor and lets you swap styles while it's still available, meaning you can do whatever the fuck you want in that range without needing to swap to Royal Guard to block anything.

No he doesn't just tell them "do dat" and they go off and fight.
Every input is like a normal weapon just like Nero and Dante, completely normal inputs and combos with "stinger" type moves and high-time type moves on Shadow and Griffin being like an expanded gun moveset with some different stuff, they have all kinds of moves that you need to input yourself for them to do it. They move on their own and go to the target you have lock-on on and in your general direction if no lock on, so you have to manage them by calling them back by using the shadow slide dash-dodge and Griffin back jump and so on because they can die and then you have to wait for them to get back into action, which can be sped up by standing close to their cores.

You can use blue rose to blow it up instantly. On goliath you can get away with shooting any of its body to blow up the bomb.

With Nero just use charged shot 3 (duh) and grab them twice when they are exposed (if you have DT, use it there), that'll do the trick.
With Dante, open Pandora or use charged shotgun, you can even use Lucifer when they're stationary; when they are exposed DRI their asses a couple times.
With the other characters, uh... I don't use them so... Yeah.

To me, it seems a lot more awkward for Snatch to be R1+L1 or R1+R2. R1+O feels a lot more natural.

It's mostly that I have to let go of R1 that annoys me. It's not a big a problem in 5 since breakers have more uses, but in 4 I still get confused from time to time. Having snatch on another button would also allow you to snatch with a breakage ready too. Giving it a separate button could also allow the option between getting close to the enemy and bringing them to you like in DmC.

If you did enough damage to Blitz they won't even do that. Shadows always do it tho, I think. And evading is fun, it's only for a few seconds, come on.

Learn more moves, experiment with stringing them together, and make it to when you use Dante. If you still don't like the game when you have Dante then it's not the game for you.

DMC4 stays at about that level of quality til the very end of the game. Your mileage with 4 will depend entirely on how much you enjoy Nero and Dante's combat, because its levels and enemies kinda suck.

I'm surprised this post hasn't gotten any replies or further commentary yet, I think the idea that trish has been locked into her current position with the stock weapons and whatnot is quite an interesting notion, and I never really thought about it that way before.

To be honest I really wish she had kept nightmare-v in 4se, it would have been a neat throwback and a way to bring an otherwise completely irrelevant and obscure weapon back into the light (with a couple improvements as well). She could do away with using pandora (considering the novel said she brought those weapons to the order herself), but if they weren't so lazy they would have given her forms unique to her. Also at this point I feel like having luce&ombra is more a need for a weak-but-fast standard gun. Neither nightmare-v or pandora can fill that role because they're slow, recoil-inducing weapons with little airtime possibilities. What else cold they come up with, both for guns and for melee?

They could have given Trish a Gloria form with Lucia's moveset. Instead we got a more restricted Dante.

They made it a back input instead of a forward input on Nero because he now has a new move tied to his forward input that looks like a divekick

Split got changed to back and melee, because Nero got a new move called Payline, which is like Killer Bee. They didn't think the input made sense. Helm Breaker isn't known if it changed or not, probably not.

The helmbreaker change makes it easier to do a crossup with it, and makes it less likely to accidently input a calibur.

Depends on why you're hating it, but that is probably the worst part of the game, and you've got two really good boss fights coming your way soon.

If this is your first DMC then I advise getting the HD Collection and playing them in order. I started 4 years ago and it never clicked with me. I started the series late last year and now I'm completely invested. Each game builds on the mechanics of the previous ones, 1 is dated but it really forces you to master the basics, whereas if you start with 3 or 4 it's easy to just abuse some of the spammable abilities you get instead of relying on your whole moveset.

Helm breaker is now Nero's air back. His air fore is a move like killer bee.

When you get Nero's DT, learn to exceed and charge shot while fighting.

Only the level design sucks and it sucks a lot, the enemies are some of the best in the series in terms of gameplay.

It's on a better input now (Down+triangle) because forward+triangle is now a sweet ass piercing angle move that you will use more often than Split.

It's just back instead of forward. There's like no difference except 20 minutes of getting used to and then it's pure muscle memory.

I play with a keyboard for a lack of options, but I wish to get an adapted controller in the future. I can play more or less fine but there are things that are impossible for me to do, like those nero combos in 4 that require you to move the joystick back to forward (callibur and shuffle I think they're called). Changing to pandora's laser form is also quite difficult and takes me longer than I assume is strictly necessary.

It does stay on Dante when you have equipped as your gun, although I imagine if you switch to another gun it probably goes away. There's footage of Dante riding Cavalier with Faust hat still on his head with the magic scarf too.

Don't gauntlets always have the highest damage output of all melee weapons, kind of almost archetypically at this point? as far as I remember ifrit/beowulf/gilgamesh did the most raw damage in their respective games. I can't imagine they giving you any of these at the start of the dante part of the game just like that. Granted I don't know balrog and maybe it's not as game-breaking as it appears in my head, but all footage so far makes balrog seem EVEN BETTER than past gauntlets. Won't players just breeze through the dante section by landing strong punches, then complain it was too easy?

The only ones that suck to fight are the swords and the swordfish that disappear in the floor.
Every other enemy is pretty damn good

Damage isn't the goal of DMC. It's to be stylish. I don't see the problem with giving people the gauntlets just because they hit hard. It's more about how people choose to use them.

Usually yes, but not this game. Cavaliere is the highest damage shown for DPS so far and even that might be surpassed by fully charged Faust Hat meteor attack.

Balrog is more about a bunch of little hits in a row. Especially to charge it up. Real Impact is still a pretty big blow, but the ramp up to being able to perform it will mean it becomes situational at best.

I just like having my Nero scream "KYRIE" all over the place, the theme from the prologue being everywhere, Dante's cowboy hats, Blitz, Lucifer, the general aesthetic... You know, the stuff that 5 doesn't have.

I'm not a shitter but enemies that have a very set way they need to be fought aren't really fun to fight imo, like getting rid of Blitz takes the same optimized strategy over and over and Frosts are just kinda annoying. I'm not a shitter tho, I just don't really like many of the enemies in 4. 5 is a big step up, there doesn't seem to be many "gimmick" enemies that we've seen so far

Some might, but I think majority will be okay with having Balrog early. Especially when you get later weapons like with Caveiler having super armor and Dr Faust with it's crazy everything. Heck even king cebreus looks vastly improved and I'm curious about how Dante's new majin sword operates.

Also enemies get tougher after mission 12, so it could all be moot.

DMC3 on the other hand had very few bad enemies. I think the only ones I really hated were specific moves some enemies had, like the scythe bosses. Once they start teleporting everywhere there's no way to know if they're going to come up from below or from off the screen and instantly hit you. Other than that I enjoyed them too.

It would be criminal to change the whole motif, so they gonna keep it Orchestal, here i wouldn't be surprised if it's a slightly touched up version of Vergil 2 from DMC3

So, do we know how the campaign is gonna work? Think we'll get to play the whole thing as any character past the first playthrough?

Some missions are locked to one character
Some missions you can choose, but every character has a different path

Mephisto and Faust are just fallen that actually function and completely acceptable.
They have clear tells, you can knock them out of their form in a second when you want to murder them

Blitzes can be dealt with 3 ways as Dante, with JC charged shotgun blasts, pandora's box opening, rg'd full house or if you really suck lucifer darts
Nero might be stuck to using charge shot 3 to get their shield down, but that is it.

They've said this isn't the case. You can replay some missions with the other character that is optional in that mission, but some missions force you to play a certain one.
The footage of V fighting Cavaliere and Goliath is confirmed to be Bloody Palace, which is cool, since it shows that he has unique moves on those bosses and that they're designed even with the other characters in mind - despite them confirming that Nero is the only one who fights Goliath in the story.

Maybe my memory is obscured since I've been playing on LDK and they throw 20 Frosts at you at once and you're just constantly frozen the entire time so I might be a bit salty. One on one they're alright, though.

Yeah, LDK is just kind of insane mode that obviously wasn't supposed to be there but we got anyway. It's kinda fun tho, but I'm not a big fan.

Oh, I can see where you're coming from then. I'm used to just hitting the palace and fighting frost in pairs, maybe with a faust or an angelo on the side, but never anything as crazy as 20 at once. Specially since they have a very low stunning ratio for normal attacks, so they just spam whatever the fuck they want and I cannot possibly imagine dodging the icicles of 20 at the same time.

Sometimes I'm glad my toaster can't handle LDK without bursting internally because I'm sure I'd just get frustrated if I played it. It makes bad enemies decent and decent enemies annoying.

I still gotta get around to playing Trish and Lady. I played through with Vergil and it was alright.

DMC4 is an interesting game for me. I enjoy it every time I play it, but depending on my mood I hate the enemies or I enjoy them. I hated the way Dante played until I played him a lot more. I feel very conflicted about the whole game. 5 looks a lot better, though.

They're evasive, but trickster or snatch gets them close and then they're usually mince-meat.

You'd think after the fallen they'd know not to put enemies that can phase through walls in the game. Instead they put two enemies like that in 4. At least Fausts and Mephistos don't keep floating when their coats are down and move closer to attack.

Enigmas don't get really bad until higher difficulties. The dogs do that kind of shit at all times.
