Sengoku, like most english only. It's relatively standalone, the gameplay is top tier, and it's a solid entry with bangin' music. VI technically comes first but it's more of a slog and takes longer to get off the ground.

The UI can be upscaled manually with some work, not more than Rance VI must've taken (not for Alicesoft but the image guy). The sprites and backgrounds don't need such a thing because they're pixelated anyway. They can just be upscaled with no filter. Other assets like the country backgrounds are very simplistic with flat colors and could easily be reproduced at any scale. The animations are a series of still frames and can be upscaled with a filter, it won't be noticeable either.

Start with Rance VI. If you have the patience, you could start with 5D and get to know the story of Rizna, but is luck based, After that, Sengoku is Rance VII, Quest is Rance VIII, Rance IX and Rance X.
The older titles have remakes but most of them are japanese only so be careful.

These indie games are made by small teams, some of whom are basically friends that hang out all the time and go on vacation together, collaborating over decades.

Basically, AAA games are products, while these are passion projects. They give a shit.
There are also soulless porn games made for money or to appeal to certain people too, that's just a result of the motivations behind their creation. But there are no AAA games with as much soul as a game of this scale. It's impossible. The amount of soul in a game is inversely proportional to how many people influenced its direction. If there are enough people that various disparate teams need to have inter-departmental meetings about fundamental aspects of the game, it's over. Yet high budget games need all those people.

As an aside, this is partly why vidya feels so samey now. Why every other game has bamham third person perspective wackamole combat with Dark Souls rolling. The more people there are working on something, the more it reverts to the mean, i.e. the current expected norm, and it gets less risky. This is how a media industry becomes like Hollywood, the money floods in and prevents them from creating real art.

it's a resource management game that requires an unexpected amount of roleplaying/getting into character. it's designed for replayability, it requires you to juggle a shitton of variables, and on top of that requires a considerable amount of strategy in terms of forward thinking, deployment, and use of time/units/resources.

Nah I just don't really play eroges but I loved the older Atelier and FE games so KamiDori was like lightning in a bottle to me. I've SEEN some Rance gameplay, never really got interested. Rance's chad charisma isn't enough on its own for my tastes, and pretty much every other eroge I've ever seen is little more than a glorified VN.
