Since Ray Tracing is done by an extra chip in Nvidia RTX graphics cards couldnt they just sell it as an expensive addon (150-200$) for next gen consoles???
So people with base models have traditional lighting in their games and people with the addon chip have ray tracing activated
Ray Tracing and next generation consoles

Probably not. If anything, you will have a choice between two models. Console companies do not like modularity for some reason.
Is ray tracing really that important when the games that utilize it are utter dogshit?
That controller is madcatz level. Ugly as fuck
Nah, New consoles will be AMD because it's cheaper. Although AMD is working on a simpler technology as part of GPUOpen but probably isn't ready for prime time yet.
However Nvidia does have a metric ton of GTX1080 chips laying around so they might be sold on the cheap.
>Ray Tracing is done by an extra chip in Nvidia RTX graphics cards
eh I've heard it's just done on the main chip in shaders
console developers like being able to develop on ONE platform only, without having to deal with hardware variety (like the PC) which requires testing against the most common hardware configurations and having to detect and use different hardware.
Plus having modular consoles adds cost to the design, and the possibility of the end user breaking their console while fitting a new module.
No, console ray tracing is going to be the generation after next. Specs are being finalized as we speak, and neither company is going to adopt first gen technology that cuts performance in half.
AMD has their own ray tracing program called radeon rays. I don't know if it's comparable to ray tracing on RTX cards but if new gen consoles want real time lighting, they're probably gonna be using that.
Consoles will get it ~3 years later, so like in 2023.
AMD doesn't support it, full stop, they haven't spend the billions in R&D for it
Nvidia is clearly desperate they want more money kek
Reminder that the regular shaders are also faster on Turing due to newer architecture. People calling it a meme gen don't know what they are talking about. It's mostly the 12nm holding it back.
Im still impressed by RayTracing , Its the most promising technology since Physx
Ray tracing is not new tech nor is it propriety to Nvidia. They introduced it using Microsoft's DXR api in DX12, Nvidia has implemented the hardware acceleration for ray tracing in the Turing GPUs.
They are the first using it for gaming , I knew it existed decades before
It killed Sega. Also, why sell something for $200 when you could force them to buy a whole new conwole for $600?
>Console companies do not like modularity for some reason.
Microsoft is up for it. But Sony isn't. Sony is the smart one here btw.
Keeping the hardware fixed and static is an important asset for optimization purposes and for hardware access in development. The more hardware out there, the less optimized your game is going to be because the performance budgeting will be less effective.
No it isn't. It was never effecient in use. If you want last gen graphics with some cool simulations then go ahead.
Remember ps3...
nice
even more reasons for devs to focus on unoptimized grafix instead of gameplay
Ray Tracing is easy to implement ,if they end dropping the traditional method and only do ray tracing it is in fact faster and easier to do
I find it hilarious that the so-called anti-graphicswhores are against easier and better implementation of graphics which saves time for other development.
That would be fucking stupid.
Sony and Microsoft would never use NVIDIA proprietary hardware on their console.
AMD already has it's own ray tracing called Radeon rays that is open source. It is likely that consoles will use that if they even bother with ray tracing next gen.
>Stops at 2009
Hmmm...
The only thing that will save Vidya is making them easier and cheaper to make.
Ray Tracing will certainly help , games have only been getting more tecnically complex over the years
I miss 3D platformers that aren't Mario. That used to be my favorite genre before the ps3wii360 era killed it
anybody with a brain waited until 2009/2010 to get a ps3 though
Unless you want to cut off a large portion of your customers, you have to make your game compatible with the lowest common denominator. Lots of games made for the 360 had to account for users that bought a base model without any HDD, for example.
