What do you guys think of Jak & Daxter?
I thought about trying the first game out today, are the sequels worth playing too?

bump

cool thanks Yea Forums

Just play them nigger they're fun and short

jak 1 2 and 3 are all worth playing

A lot of people like the first game and hate the second two. I like the second two a lot more.

2 and 3 are ultra edgelord versions of ratchet and clank that forgot you needed good gameplay and not just a recognizable series name. 1 and daxter are the only worthwhile games in the series

But 3 is absolute kino

Which Ratchet & Clank games are worth playing too?

I don't remember 3 at all, but both 1 and 2 are fun. one is a nice 3D platformer, while two is a strange mixture of the first game and GTA.

The sequels are very different games. They often get derided as GTA clones but the shooting and driving really is a major part of those games.
Hard to say whether you'll like them or not. I'd say they're worth a shot, but I always felt Ratchet did the platformer/shooter hybrid shtick a lot better.

The first four on PS2 are all classics. If you're still hungry you can check out the main series of PS3 games, the gameplay is still solid even if they lack the charm of the PS2 games.

First one is great. 2 and 3 are mixed bags, but I love them all unconditionally anyway

Aged very well.

1 - collectathon platformer
2 - cyberpunkish GTA clone with driving and platforming in a nice ratio
3 - mad max desert sim with higher emphasis on driving and a bit less platforming but there are way more guns as well

They are all good and worth playing, also they tend to run in a pretty high framerate for a ps2 game. Jak 2 is pretty fucking challenging as well.

>with higher emphasis on driving
Is it good? Driving was the worst part of two for me.

There are two different driving models in Jak 3. One is the hover vehicles in the city, basically the same as Jak II. The other are desert vehicles which - well they're different, you might like them more or less.

First one's fun
Second one was kind of dull and had way too much pointless driving.
Never tried third because I didn't like 2 enough

The trilogy is worth playing, they are all very good. Jak 1 is the worst one because it's just a pretty basic kids platforming game, but even then it's a lot of fun. Jak 2 and 3 innovated a lot and were god tier.

Driving in 2 was bad because of the steering in all those narrow alleways.
3 is open ground so it works better. The worst thing is a very 180 degree turn in term of the atmosphere. Like I said, 2 was cyberpunkish and then 3 feels very.... odd. Mad Max like I said. Combat is also improved.

I'd say that 3 is the least memorable but its very polished.

I can also say that Dexter on psp is an enjoyable although generic as fuck platformer.
Jak X is an underrated gotta go fast vehicular combat game.

Haven't played the Final Frontier or whatever the fuck its called.

Most people prefer Jak 2 as the best one (it honestly is)

I played Jak and Daxter for the first time a couple months ago, and it honestly aged like milk. Yeah, having a seamless world in 2001 was a technical marvel, but the gameplay is just dull compared to other big-name platformers released prior and since. I hear 2 & 3 are worse, so I don't suggest you waste your time with the series.

>The worst thing is a very 180 degree turn in term of the atmosphere.
That doesn't bother me too much. Feels like all of the Jak games do that. This thread is making me want to replay the series.

There is really no valid argument for "driving in 2 was bad", just means you didn't bother to learn it. Because I remember it vividly, it was perfectly possible to race at top speeds through the whole city without hitting a single car or building, you just had to learn to change the altitude a lot and often.
It was one of the sickest driving mechanics of any game I've played imo, it was so intense how you had to constantly dodge things in 4 directions, both horizontally and vertically - instead of the typical left and right in most driving games.

You just had to git gud.

2 and 3 are far better, everyone except few contrarians on Yea Forums acknowledge that dude. They're like GTA except good.

Jak 1 and the rest are pretty different. Jak 1 is my favorite platformer of all time, and a pretty neat piece of work because they managed to make the whole world continuous with no loading screens

>that mission where you control dax on the rocket in jak 2

Attached: thats it.jpg (228x221, 13K)

I didn't enjoy the driving much at all. It just feels like a waste of time unless you're in one of the faster vehicles, all of which are brittle as fuck.

Vertical aspect was fine and pretty cool mechanic, I'm talking about steering. While indoors and during platforming parts the game ran at 60fps, in cities during driving it would go down to about 20. Shit framerate + clunky understeering mechanics with sudden oversteering meant that it was very easy to fuck up.

>Jak II and 3 are better than GTA
>Not contrarian as fuck

>are the sequels worth playing too?
No.

Only the first one is worth it.
ND fell for the GTA meme and shat the bed HARD with the second one.

Which is why, you're supposed to not get hit. Something you can do if you learn to drive. You will get your shit pushed in while driving CONSTANTLY if you think of it like a normal driving game and only dodge to the sides. You absolutely have to majorly use vertical movement, up and down.

It was fun as fuck imo.

First one is a great 3d platformer, one of my favorites. Never played the other two.

Even if you don't like the GTA stuff there is enough good content in Jak II for it to be worth playing.

First game was kino, 2 and 3 meh tier.

So Jak and Ashelin fucked right?

Jak 2 and 3 play better than any GTA on the ps2.
PC is obviously another thing.

Does Daxter ever get his body back?
Also is the Sly series worth checking out? I thought about getting that and the Ratchet & Clank series.

That's a contrarian opinion, regardless of its truth.

Both those series are great.

i only played jak 3 and it was very good

I don't remember any such thing as steering being bad or especially framerate issues. I'm pretty sure mine was a stable 30fps in the city, 20fps would be really noticeably choppy and I never encountered that.
Not really, GTA games never had good gameplay or good story. They were just really funny.
Jak 2 however has a really good story, interesting cyberpunk setting, very unique combination of a large variety of gameplay types most of which were really fun (the driving, skating, shooting combat, platforming - really only the turret sections sucked).

1st game is one of my favourite games, couldn't recommend it any more, 2 and 3 are fantastic games too, if a little flawed in some aspects. People talk about 2 and 3 being GTA clones, don't listen to those retards, the only thing they have in common really is the way you go from mission to mission and the open world aspect, which is loosely similar GTA.

Sly is pretty good, I'd say its on par with jak series.

1 = very basic platformer
2 = platformer with stealth sections, sneaking, various mini games and nice pacing, a lot of variety
3 = same as 2 though some people say its not as good. Series also has pretty fun boss fights, very comparable to crash bosses.

There is a very enjoyable 40 hours or so between those 3 games to be spent.

Jak 2 and 3 are far better than 1. Like it's not even close. First one is literally just a very basic platformer game, while 2 and 3 did something no other games have done before, and succeeded at it.

Yeah, the entire main trilogy is great. Just be aware that there's a fuckhuge jump in tone between 1 and 2 with the first game being a lighthearted 3D platformer with no strings attached while the sequels are basically "GTA for kids whose parents didn't let them play actual GTA"-core, and also go more heavier on the story. Second and third game have open world sandbox, but in my opinion they don't really utilize it that well since there's not much to explore or do apart from mini-challenges, and both games still shine best when you're playing a proper level outside the open sandbox.

I think guns in 2 and 3 were actually a great addition to the first game's moveset, since both the melee and firearms flow well together: stuff like punching to charge forward and following it up with a shotgun blast or spin kicking and firing the rifle with ricocheting shots at the same time. If there's one thing Jak series did better than R&C games it's melee and guns feeling like they complement each other.

I played it for the first time two or three years ago, the whole trilogy. I assure you that in the city it goes pretty damn low.

Jak 2 does not hold up nearly as well as nostalgiafags would have you believe, and that's coming from someone that loved the game as a kid. The missions just aren't fun. Jak 1 is definitely fun. Jak 3 I like but it's a bit of a time waster game.

>while 2 and 3 did something no other games have done before
Many games poorly ripped off GTA. 2 was shit bro, and 3 is only okay.

Being good at one thing is better than being average at a dozen things. Unless you're Deus Ex, which Jak II definitely isn't.

I loved the first Jak and Daxter, it had some charm, a unique setting and was a solid platformer.
The sequels changed the tone completely and chased after current trends, shooting and driving. there's still some platforming but you're gonna have to do a race mission first to get there.
it's like how assassins creed forgot that people wanted to play a stealth game about assassinations.

Play Sly 2, it's a great game. Sly 3 has too many minigames and other stuff it gets bogged down by. I would consider myself a fan of the series and I haven't even finished the first one. It's so different and... not good.

I WANT TO purchase PRAXIS

Sly 1 feels very bare bones. Unlike Jak 1 which is a very complete platformer with plenty to offer even today.
Luckily Sly 1 is also fairly short.

The main issue with Sly is that the cutscenes/intro premise lead you into believing that you will be playing this sneaky stealthy game, while that only turns out to be the aesthetic. Sure there is some very light dodging of lights and stuff here and there but for the most time it's just a platformer game with some puzzle solving here and there.

I keep noticing that pattern seems to also apply to the Spyro and Ratchet series

not bad

What version of the game and what version of which console? There are like 4 different versions.
At least my original had no dips below 30 fps. Maybe it's a remaster issue or something.

Nah, you're just retarded user. 2 didn't poorly rip off GTA, it literally took what GTA does and did it far better, then added a ton of good platforming and fun shooting combat, and a much better story than any other Jak game. It was god tier.
You're a dumb contrarian.

Spyro too. I tried giving Ratchet games a chance but it just felt... it felt like a Jak game made for Nintendo. Super light and easy going, super easy, just tilt the stick up and mash button to shoot. I gave up after 20 minutes, it failed to capture my attention in any way.

Was I wrong?

Real PS2, unsure if it was PAL or NTSC, my discs are not around to check. I imagine it's fixed and smooth in the remaster.

first game is the best, the rest just get worse.

ratchet and clank were the better games anyway.

I think at the end of 3, the forerunners or whatever the fuck they're called end up being Otsels just like Daxter, so, finding out that he's basically a god, Daxter decides to decline their offer to return to his former form, and instead turns his big tiddy gf into one, completely ruining her forever
really stupid fucking ending tbdesu

Wow that is a retarded conclusion

Will Naughty Dog ever make fun vidya like this again?

>Super Mario 64 for PlayStation 2
I only like the games that come after that one.

>SM64 is bad

They did. You ever played The Last of Us?

I forgot about that... the only screens were deaths screens and if you jumped in the portal.

>tfw they never came back

Yes, the multiplayer was fun but the single player felt like it was trying too hard to be super serious because of the story.
I just don't like the direction Neil Druckmann has taken the studio in the past 5 or so years to the point where stuff like Donut Drake is too triggering for him to add into a game.

First game is a great open world adventure with a neat setting, lore, characters and visuals.
Second game throws most of that out the window and becomes a frustrating 3rd person shooter with ramped up difficulty that becomes considerably satisfying to overcome.
Third game was the second game with a little more leniency but I gave up around the desert race. Shame, because I was set on finishing it after overcoming 2's bullshit.

HERE COMES A BIG ONE

play both and also Ty the Tasmanian Tiger

I emulated and played through Jak 1, it's still very good and the emulation is perfect aside from the eye glitch. Jak 2 however is unplayable, it randomly speeds up making platforming impossible. and it also has the eye glitch.

Eye glitch?

Yes, the other two are the best

FUCK uncharted for killing this series.

I'd honestly recommend you to buy some ps2 games on ps store or the original thing for the price of two bottles of root beer.If you have that black paper press we call a ps2 nowadays.I'm not deliberately trying to tell you to waste your shekels, but ps3 emulation is at a better state than ps2 right now.Screwed up hardware is legitimately the pirate killer

Based

i love it

Attached: Jak 3_20181129195135.png (1920x1080, 649K)

Jak 2 and 3 are pretty much the only games I want to play that still have major issues, Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank are more or less perfect on PCSX2 now

The fuck is this

I played 1 when I was like 7. Got it for my birthday instead of a spy kit. Best decision I ever made. Never played 2 or 3, looked too scary and mature for me back then. Played combat racing and daxter though. Good series

In Jak 3, you can get a model viewer.

Jak 2 is annoyingly difficult, at least that's how i remember it

Jak 3 is top fun, really enjoyed it

disregard spinoffs

Jak 4 never

i know that part in jak 2 made me love cleavage

Attached: Jak 3_20181129195026.webm (940x450, 963K)

Bullshit faggot. They took the exact same solid platforming from the first game and takes it onto a GTA clone and it worked well. The "game play" is literally no difference between the first and last two besides the added guns and vehicles.

I'm gonna FUCK praxis

So, how is PlayStation 2 emulation? How does Jak and Daxter emulate?

Attached: Groinal_Attachment.png (171x244, 78K)

Shit taste

Why is it contrarian? Running, jumping, shooting, and stealing vehicles is so much better. Jak 2 3 objectively has a better movement system than any GTA on the ps2.

2 and 3 aren't as good as the first one because they have dozens of mechanics and none feel as focused/fleshed out as platforming/collectathon type of gameplay Jak 1 offered.

Jak 2/3 movement and shooting still holds up today.

No chance. Nobody would tolerate a third person shooter where you can't aim today.

The precursor lore was carried over into 2 and was easily the coolest part of 3.

Jak 1 is kino the rest suck ass

You have good taste

These games need to come to Steam. I would love to play the trilogy again.

On the other hand the lack of proper aiming stops the game from turning into boring whackamole like most 3rd person shooters

First one emulates great.2 and 3 have some major fuck ups.

Attached: Jako boy and daxi.png (500x750, 154K)

Games with actual gameplay don't get good review scores, so no

Just because 2/3 have guns doesn't mean they are shooters. They expand upon the yellow eco that was in the fist game.

1 is the old school fun.
2 and 3 are a different kind of fun but fun nonetheless.
Then once the sequel was made from a 3rd party dev the entire series was killed. Which is a shame.

Only the stupidest Yea Forumstards would dare say GTA clone the dumbass parrots.

Attached: zoomzoomisboomboom.png (540x345, 64K)

Doesn't Jak 2 suffer from horrendous padding from just driving?

You mean the worst part of that game? Cool.

You would never see this from nu-ghty dog.

Didn't know DSP browsed Yea Forums.

Not really. It takes at worst 3 minutes to go from one extreme of the map to another. But the games never really makes you do that.

Yes aiming with yellow echo was absolutely garbage. But removing that need to aim in 2/3 made it Much more fun.

List your most hated levels you faggots:
1: riding the turret on the rail shooting those flying metal heads
2: daxter riding the missile into the bar mascot
3: collecting artifacts/ survivors before the sandstorm hits
4: getting attacked after grabbing that badge off the door
5: any jet boarding mission

2 is still one of my favorite games today. Replaying it now actually after only playing through it once when it first came out.... yes it still holds up. Can be very difficult and rage inducing.

>that ambush level
>that falling boulder level

Also I heard the PS4 version was finally getting a patch? Did it?

I only really particularly hate this one in jak 2. They health bar presents the mercs's health all wrong, the laser metal heads are fucking bullshit and the last stand at the end makes my ass clench. That's coming from someone who plays on Hero mode exclusively.

In jak 3,I hate pretty much everything related to the desert

Attached: maxresdefault (1).jpg (1280x720, 86K)

>Going out with sig to destroy that metal head nest
Easily one of the worst missions in the game. Maneuvering that fatass truck through those tunnels was a headache. If its gun didn't aim itself I probably wouldve lost my fucking mind.
