Gaige for singleplayer, Maya for multiplayer
I like Maya but Gaige is also supremely based.

Krieg is objectively the best, but Gaige a cute and fun to play if you don't use her stupid bullet ricochet mechanic.
Pretty much this, krieg is my top but Gaige is a super close second since she’s super fun

You need bullet ricochet if you're going an anarchy build. I always went elemental with interspersed outburst. Getting massive slag burst cross map with a sniper is really strong, she's a better sniper than Zero in most cases.

Maya with CPK trivializes normal mode and helps a lot in TVHM. Maya is also top-tier for multiplayer if you bring rez.
Who should I play on my first run? I'm leaning towards Axton because I'm going solo.

Maya and Salvador are the most practical but their skills don't really evolve over time in function, so the whole run will be the same with good but subtle stat differences
Zer0 and Axton however do get flashier abilities/addons to their skills so I'd consider them
And as you know, Gaige and Krieg are very fun gimmick characters so if you're willing to spend some extra cash then those two are great candidates

Depends on how far you want to go and whether or not you're willing to use rebalance patches.
Unoffical Fan Patch does a good job of cleaning things up while trying to preserve the game as much as possible.
If you're playing straight vanilla, Axton works fine, though due to some dumb shit like some explosive weapons not counting as grenade damage (which matters) you'll be slightly gimped near the endgame.
Maya is pretty solid overall, pretty easy to play and can use preeetty much everything decently, but doesn't have any stupid busted setups like most other characters, so solo raiding with her is more difficult.
Zero is great, but he's harder to play, needs to be built specifically and dies very fast.
But there's some fun stuff you can do with him like Jakobs Shotgun builds with 0ne Sh0t 0ne Kill.
Sal makes the game entirely free past a certain point, so much so to the point where it might even become boring. But if you just want to run around screaming holding down your shoulders buttons, there you go.
Gaige does fine up to the OP levels then drops off pretty hard unless you want to build anarchy for 2 hours then contemplate actual suicide when you accidentally fall down a pit and lose it all. Cute, though.
Krieg makes the early game free once you get release the beast, then you'll need to actually read his skills and make a build for UVHM onwards, but he's very viable all the way through.
Gaige is honestly the best solo character, esp on harder difficulties. Her pet is a good tank and can get you revive kills.

if you mean Ultimate Vault Hunter then yeah going solo is a terrible idea, but i'd say the game is decently balanced the first two playthroughs
If you're going to run melee krieg, it's too much of a boost to ignore.
Yeah you might down yourself with it sometimes, and it sucks, but it is what it is.
The series had a big steam sale recently, so that's probably why.
