I never beat the game, only got about 10 hours in. My advice to you is to don't main demons, mix and match them as much as possible.

Abuse the fuck out of elemental weaknesses

Make lots of friends
Then fuse them

Always
Be
Fusing

Do not invest in STR. If you want to use physical skills, invest in DEX instead.

For some asinine reason, STR only scales your basic sword attack. DEX is for physical skills.

Buffs/debuffs are super useful
Remember to have good variety of elemental attacks and defenses. Game is quite easy but having all demons using the same elemental spells or being weak to the same element can fuck you up.
Don't go strength, it barely affects your phys skills, and you will be using skills mostly
/vg/ also has some useful advice

Magic all the way
Get demons for physical, Healing, Magic, and support.

-Don't try to stick with demons in early game. The more they level up the harder it is to get higher levels with them, so fuse them away or get more demons through negotiation to fuse them away into stronger demons.

-THAT said, Lham Dearg, a very early demon, has phys resistance, which is very rare for low level demons, so keeping it around might actually be used for a certain early boss.

-DON'T start negotiations when there's more than one enemy demon alive. SMTIV has very low hp and defense stats compared to other games in the franchise in order to make the battles faster, but as a result things can finish in a flash one way or another. If the negotiation goes badly, the enemies get one free turn which might be enough to kill your party if there are multiple enemies around.

- Don't put points into STR
- The first dungeon is the hardest in the game, so don't give up that fast (since this game becomes fucking fantastic later on)
- Finding the enemies weakness is your top priority, because you want to get as many extra turns as possible
- A lot of dialogue choices will push your alignment into one or the other direction, be wary of that

Enjoy the ride
