It's possible given nintendo's recent trend of trying to shake things up with the franchises,
Like they've been attempting to one up themselves with their main line games recently, odyssey, breath of the wild and smash ultimate as examples.
If they give the same treatment to AC we should expect to see an attempt at an "animal crossing ultimate" so to speak, so it could honestly go anywhere IMO.
I'm not too sure on the change of camera angle though, it's kinda become the identity of the franchise, to make so a drastic change would be to make it less recognisable to itself.
Plus it was comf and as a series veteran I'm not sure how I'd feel about such a change.
I'm open to new ideas though, last thing I want is for this franchise to become stagnant.

BOTW style AC sounds fucking retarded but I have been asking for an AC that's styled like the Mario Kart map as a sort of pipe dream.

I want some damn new maps to live in for sure. I'm tired of the same coastal village with a river flowing through. It's a series that bases half its gameplay off visiting others so allowing people to live in different regions, biomes, or whatever is a great way to do just that. Each could have their own different fish, insects and so on along with their own exclusive activities so people actually have shit to do when they visit each other.

Larger villages with buildings and objects closer to being full-sized could be pretty neat, maybe with different village styles. Giving you the option between more forested, typical villages, something more urban or whatever could be pretty interesting. Though it might be better if that was random was well, but I don't really know.

Maybe add in caves like people talked about ACNL having for a while. Where'd that rumour come from?

No, not really. If Metroid Prime 4 kept not meeting the level they wanted it to be on, I'm glad they delayed it instead of releasing a game they themselves don't think is good. So if AC will be in the same situation, it would suck, but not as much as finally getting a new Animal Crossing but it being really bad.

It's something that should've happened years ago and they still refuse to do it. We don't need some big sandbox map like BoTW or Minecraft, just give us some maps with different characteristics for one. Like how about a town where half the map is water and villagers can build have house boats or some shit? Insects wouldn't be as plentiful but you'd have fishing and scuba diving along with activities to make up for the lack of actual real estate. What about a mountain region with some actual topography like ledges and cliffsides? There's so much they could be doing in terms of overall map design and they won't. If the Switch game is more of the same of what we've gotten the last three games then I may have to drop the series until they finally get a clue.

Sounds fun and cool, I'd honestly like this but I think nintendo is afraid of making a situation were someone might not be able to finish the game because have to depend on other people to get everything and they don't know anyone who owns the game and has the biome they need.

I want them to add cooking as an activity, with a recipe book that you can fill out like the encyclopedias, maybe even add a grocery store/restaurant with a new npc or Wendell where you can buy ingredients or dishes to eat on the spot. The food could give you various limited time buffs like increased luck, movement speed, higher chance of finding rare creatures, friendship increases faster, etc.. There could be high tier dishes with rare ingrediants that could invoke a certain npc to visit the town the next day, like you leave the dish in a container near the town tree and the smell attracts them, so you wouldn't have to pray to RNGesus for the nps you want to come by. You could even gift dishes to other animals and shit. If they're gonna make all the villagers talk about food, might as well make it related to the fuckin game and add it as an actual mechanic.

After Splatoon success I can see Nintendo and Angry Old Man giving the team more freedom.

Being able to assign a garden somewhere around the village would be cool, or maybe even treating the whole village like a garden where you can grow things and have like an outside space to place furniture.
Would be interesting to have a crop system that literally takes days to grow stuff, coming back to water it once a day or whatever.
Though for sake of comfort they should probs have the crops just not grow further without watering, not have them wither and die if you miss days.

Not user you're replying to but it was variety for me. NL has variety of things to do but the villager variety took a huge nose dive. More villagers than ever but they're all fundamentally the same. Neutering the personalities and their lines made the whole thing stale much faster. I ended up just getting my favorites and then ignoring them for the most part after a few months. I don't mind Isabelle but NL villagers are basically window dressing.

I'm being mostly facetious but there was a stylistic charm to the original character designs and I think it kinda go lost over the years
also the characters have long bodies to show their shirt designs off better, weirdly long arms and legs would just look weird and the small body would make any shirt deigns condensed comparatively
though I think the villagers design is the way it is because of the camera perspective, they had to make things visible especially on a screen like the DS so maybe an up in graphics means they wont need to do that anymore and we can get a more classic look to the villiger or something new and less long in the body

Here is my idea for animal crossing- you take over the business of a private detective and have an option to solve spontaneously generated mysteries such as 'what happened to Fauna's purse' or 'where did Ankha move to' or 'who took the ice cream.' You will be able to deduce answers if you visit the town often, speak to people regularly, and know what everyone's normal routine is and what's new or suspicious. Also there will be a few clues about but it should be more about deduction from what you already know. The 'event' will happen in real time, so you might even witness part of it in action.

You will have the option to present your conclusion or not do anything and let it pass. If you get it right you get bells and respect of villagers, who will bring you steadily trickier problems. If you get it wrong, it will sour their opinion of you. The detective stuff should all be light in tone. Like Bianca thinks Punchy is acting shady lately, so you follow him, and find that he is, but it's because he's planning a surprise birthday party for Bianca. Maybe Red is a thief doing minor stuff you can catch sometimes.

I think it works because it plays into AC's greatest strength, which is you just want to hang around and talk to people. It will reward the player by giving an undercurrents of happening that you are rewarded for being observant.
