Confirming they will not add a character, doesn't confirm they will add other instead, again, is more likely they don't have anything to begin with. The only reason we start discussing Microsof to begin with were those stupid Minecraft rumors, and then the internet wining that Banjo is better. There is not solid case for Microsoft in Smash, all the minecraft leaks have been slowly dying, but there was never evidence for Banjo to begin with, this relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo started after the Smash inner development was mostly done and the DLC decided. There is at best a 20% chance of a Microsoft rep, assuming it was the last DLC chosen, but still, is really unlikely.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Steve was moved from base game to dlc. He required a lot of work with designing his block based move set. It’s how it was with Mewtwo in 4, remember

Do you think this stuff just happens overnight? This kind of planning takes months of talks and negotiations. Phil Spencer has been pretty adamant in seeing Banjo-kazooie in Smash bros. Phil and Nintendo have been in talks 8 months before the DLC was finalized in November 2018. It stands to reason that Phil possibly threw in putting in Banjo-kazooie as DLC during those talks.

Vergeben was the "strongest source" for the Minecraft leaks, and between the Minecraft boss we never got, and after he assure us that the 2D Zelda games was NOT a Link's Awakening remake, is clear he run out of thrust worthy sources himself, half way through the Smash release.

But you think that Microsoft decide to release their products on Switch when this was NX, or that they receive developers kits from Nintendo? Their relationship may not be bad, but it wasn't that strong during the Smash development.

This current plans of Game Pass and Microsoft IP's on Switch may be old, but not old enough to have a factor on the Smash development or negotiations for DLC.

Making his model would be the easiest thing to do. Steve is the purest example of a soulless, lazy, and cynical business decision. Nintendo has shown loyalty to the fans, I doubt they would take a risk like that when Banjo-kazooie's fan base is closer to Smash's demographic. At best the Blockhead deserves a Mii swordfighter costume because let's face it, the diamond sword is more iconic.

This isn't about base game since none of the DLC were worked on except Plant. Again, this kind of partnership takes months and months of planning and meetings. Even then, Microsoft's relationship with Nintendo was probably growing during the plans for Minecraft crossplay. If you think Phil did not at least mention Banjo for Smash bros at any point during that time then you are lost on me.

You look at Capcom and Konami and they're represented by both of their bigger, more popular/important franchises (Street Fighter and Metal Gear), but also have their not-as-big series that also happen to be more popular amongst the Nintendo crowd (Mega Man and Castlevania). Ideally it'd be the same with Microsoft with Halo and Banjo-Kazooie being repped with characters

Battletoads aren't nearly as iconic of Rare's time at Nintendo as Banjo-Kazooie is. Even today most people still see Banjo as a Nintendo character, not a Microsoft one.
