From City of Heroes

layoff of devs working on side unannounced projects.

I thought the game was doing relatively well as far as mmos are doing.

archive.fo/s9N2m

It's almost seven years old at this point and its last expansion came out in 2017 and wasn't really all that good. Plus they're owned by NCSoft, which is really all you need to know if you're familiar with a game called City of Heroes.

it still doing well, the projects they were working on aren't. Is true that the game got fucking stale recently, but maybe is because they put more devs on those unannounced things nobody cares.

Are you happy now, Yea Forums? You shat on this game since its release, you guys should be firing fireworks by now.

Attached: 886849645384219.jpg (579x597, 26K)

>You're using an ad blocker. We wondered if you might not?

Why are gaming sites the only ones who do this?

people shat on wow too for years and is still alive. I don't see the difference here.

I dont think people who shat on it were ever happy since most of the hate came from people disillusioned with what they did to it. Its like watching the end of a house fire theres nothing more to be said really

>Why are gaming sites the only ones who do this?
Not only them, but regular news sites also do it.
Because they are a fucking dying medium.

the shitaku article is trash

Regards from GW1

They cancelled a scheduled livestream today. After 3 hours of making people wait and wonder why it isn't happening.
Game has already been on maintenance mode for a while and now we're just waiting for the closure announcement.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO BUT WE JUST GOT A NEW MOUNT

Attached: 4477701.png (808x805, 598K)

The livestream was supposed to be about that mount, even. Enjoy your vaporware WvW updates!

>After 3 hours of making people wait and wonder why it isn't happening
people are fucking idiots tho. They cancelled the previous stream too and this shit about the layoffs was all over the internet. It was obvious.

is the bot still going?

Hopefully we will get a mobile GW from NCSoft

they should close lineage 2 and aion first if they want to close gw2, since they're doing worse than it.

They probably don't have 400 devs working on each of them. GW2 likely costs way more to develop and maintain than other games on actual life support that still bring in comparable profits.

Now that my mount parade mmo is dead, what mmo should I play to display my e-penis around?

most of those devs are fucking leechers tho, ence the layoff. Why not focusing on gw2 instead of other trash if they can't menage to release shit fast? Gw2 is dying because of that.

>low IQ CoFags still think GW2 is Wildstar

>I bought the game at launch

Attached: 1481330370835s.jpg (239x250, 5K)

ArenaNet has been trying to kill off GW2 with their incompetence since 2015 anyway.
>almost no new skins (main type of in-game rewards), just cash shop single-piece outfits now
>nearly a year of complete content drought between LWS2 and HoT
>one raid per year, one dungeon per 9 months, one balance patch per 6 months
>no notable in game rewards (few armor skins, no glider or mount skins), only generic legendary grind
>all the focus on solo story without replay value in a *MMO* while proper group content gets neglected
>SPvP gamemode is effectively dead
>WvW is only played by the people who are fine with how it is, but they're still trying to ruin it
>competitive PvE scene also dead with so few updates
All that's left are mindles open-world autoattackers and furry ERP circles.

Same and played only a few hours of it before dropping it.

i wish guild wars 2 had a better combat system, or even just paced out the rate of new skills and evolution of combat. The only reason i didn't stay on GW2 was because it got so stale so quick in the combat.

BUT DODGES MAKE THE COMBAT DEEP
YOU JUST DONT UNDERSTAND YOU TAB COMBAT LOVING WOWFAG

who are you even mad at cunt

the real problem regarding this is all the development team who actually made the games code were pushed into that other canceled project and or left the company which in the end compiled into a mountain of spaghetti code no one knew how to change which is hilarious. Took them fucking 5 years to start unraveling it themselves

I got shilled into buying to latest expansion
>literally no new dungeons
>literally no new group activity at all
>just new busy work that keeps you preoccupied for no reason

why was the latest expansion praised again?

>The /gw2g/ bot is still going

lol

The majority of experienced GW1 devs who worked on core parts of GW2, such as the engine, left shortly before or after GW2's release. Consider that they took 4 years (2008-2012) to develop all of core GW2 and it's been over 6 years (2012-2019) since then, and how much have they added on top with their bigger, better-funded team?

>he thinks anyone in gw2 actually ever had an e-penis to flaunt around

I was honestly laughing about people who actually made any legendary or if they bought shop skins. Meanwhile I did weekly raids (which anyone can do, but most choose not to) in fucking default cloth and flipping skins on the TP. You can not achieve anything in GW2. The sPvP is fun tho.

It had its niche as a substitute for WoW or FFXIV without a monthly fee. It was relatively polished. The problem is that it had a very bad launch and it was never really good. It was always just good enough.
This is more because A.net had no future and NCsoft saw it. The age of MMOs is over, A.net's reputation is poor due to all the fuck-ups with GW2, the talented devs who all left, and no one was going to buy their other games.

Is their general still fucked?

What general? nah the bot isn't around anymore but the game is so dead that their threads die before 300 posts

>big update comes out
>do X to receive item Y, which gives currency Z
>learn mastery X, to overcome Y, which lets you progress Z
>expansion comes out
>do X to receive item Y, which gives currency Z
>learn mastery X, to overcome Y, which lets you progress Z
>second expansion comes out
>do X to receive item Y, which gives currency Z
>get mount X, to overcome Y, which lets you get mount Z
And to keep you playing you are being fed all these worthless items on the way. It's a massive skinner box that doesn't give you anything in return.

>City of Heroes
Fuck them, every time I tried to search for something related to Company of Heroes That game popped up in the search results instead.

I bought it a week before it went F2P without knowing it was going free
I played it for a month and uninstalled. I liked the Charr though

WE ALREADY HAD THIS THREAD

are the devs going to update GW2 game engine from dx9 before they go into maintenance mode?
sounds like they had the funds but blew it all on cancelled dumb shit.

when is base gw1 game going f2p?

Played it for 2 weeks on release and never touched it again. Cant even remember my acc.

Of course not. They were never going to do that. Most of the devs who have actually developed the GW1 engine and later repurposed it for GW2 are no longer with the company and the rest don't know how to do stuff with it. d912pxy (which a single player has developed by themselves, by the way; that may say something about GW2 devs' competence) is your best hope at this point.

It is kinda funny how in a discussion here on MMO's being dead there are always people telling you GW2 is one of those games that are doing just fine. That shit does not fly anymore now, does it?

After the price was just increased a few weeks ago? Never.

GW2 is fine you utter retard. They had over 400 employees and I imagine most weren't even working on the fucking game. Maybe with a culling they can refocus back on what matters. NCSoft is finally cracking the whip a bit and telling them to get their shit together and concentrate on Guild Wars.

but people can play base gw2 for free...

pottery

>GW2 is fine you utter retard
if they were fine, they wouldn't have NCsoft fixing them. just a tip for you babe. that shit only works on reddit.

GW2 has way more cash shop focus and base GW2 is basically equivalent to a demo version, since you can't really play any relevant content well.

The game is still profitable with peaks and valleys like any other. These people getting sacked were not part of Guild Wars 2 although some were in the past they were moved off of it.

*downvotes you*

It is still fine by definition. Those who have been playing for almost 7 years are just running out of things to do, as one would after playing the game for so long.

Attached: 1550906418149.webm (960x540, 1.93M)

the expansions are the only peaks. ever. look for yourself.
the people getting sacked? until a list is made public you nor I know what involvement/projects they worked on, and probably never will. i'm sorry for you if you buy into bullshit PR responses and disgruntled employee twitter statements. if NCSoft had to step in, there is fuckery going on. massive fuckery.

This game is still a fun theme park if you don't want to play modern wow.

link it

This game deserves no respect.

Pretty much. If you play a base game class spec then you're not welcome in raids, dungeons, fractals or pvp, because the expanions are practically pay2win - especially in pvp. Don't agree with the cash shop statement though. Yes, GW2 has a big cash shop, but nothing in it is of value. Even the money fed salvagers take a thousand hours to pay for itself. Some like the airship tickets, but even they are useless considering you can just teleport into the heart of mists. There's also no other use for gold, other than buying cash shop currency, since most things are account bound anyway. So it ain't really bad.

Now THAT was a nice looking weapon.

youtube.com/watch?v=uw_riWk8A5Q

doesn't have anything to do with doing efficient dps. addon specs grant 3x more survivalbility and damage than base ones.

>If you dont play the meta, youre not allowed to join.
Glad I got dungeons out of the way early. D/D core elementalist is effective and fun. Post builds that are effective for you; dont have to necessarily be meta.

Attached: ele.jpg (1064x796, 287K)

>bought it
>quit after a 2 weeks
>came back after 2 years
>game suddenly fun
>expansions made it even better
It was a good purchase

every build is viable, not every build is optimal. Elitist guilds are just fringe tryhard faggots who got salty as fuck when released his original video and became even more tryhard making team comps and synergy parties to counter the math in a vacuum

yes im happy. the sooner the guild wars ip dies the quicker someone is going to make a spiritual successor to guild wars, the first one.

Attached: 1530915346888.jpg (700x544, 43K)

welp.
the market is competetive. the should have made a realy GW1 successor and not this gimicky wow feelalike

>Game has been on maintenance mode
No, but it's about to go on maintenance mode in the next year.
They're still releasing new content, new maps, new story questlines with voice acting and all that, so they still have a decent budget to work with. They said living story season 5 is coming right after Living story season 4 (which still has 1 last chapter to go). They have automated the annual festivals which was the first preparation step in putting the game in maintenance mode, after season 5 of Living Story? That's when you can expect maintenance mode for at least a few years until the population drops to the point of it not being profitable even with a skeleton team running it. GW1 is down to a skeleton crew (who did add a few QOL things recently to the game actually, although the price on them is to a point where I wouldn't buy the storage tabs), and GW1 has been on maintenance mode since 2011, and even then what new content was added since 2007 was relatively sparse, no new maps, just some new quests taking place on existing maps. It is however still profitable to keep open.

GW2 won't be "dying" for another 3-5 years probably. But it will become stale and automated for the most part with no new content just new gem store updates, occasional class balance tweaks, and maybe the occasional QOL improvement here and there.

We basically have 1 year of new content already being worked on though.

S
Ascalon stands.

I thought condition engi was still good as long as your APM is good.

Oh, also, it makes sense that they will end the new content somewhere around the 8th anniversary of the game, with the 8th birthday presents being the last unique ones they release (level 80 scrolls), after that every birthday will just be a repeat of the 8th birthday presents.

Meta isn't why. See You'll die a lot without expansions and you might be able to offset it slightly with skill, but the fact remains that somebody who owns PoF can just take much more punishment than someone playing vanilla. Meta builds only decide how much faster you can do the content and yes, that's subjective. It has nothing to do with elitism. In fact you can raid with exotic gear quite easily, but not with vanilla specs. Vanilla specs straight up means that the rest of the team has to do the job while you spend most of your time dead. In sPvP there are vanilla 2-3 builds that are glasscannon which allow you to kill expansion players, but otherwise you have absolutely no chance in a 1 vs 1 to ever kill someone using an expac spec. They're just way too tanky or have mobility out of their ass.

They're releasing new content which has been partially completed quite some time ago. Also, it's mostly single-use story content too.
GW1 updates were made by 1-2 devs in their free time, not by even a maintenance crew.
The reason why they're releasing LWS5 instead of expansion 3 is because there's far less work involved in making throwaway maps and solo story instances than a set of elite specs, a new mechanic a la gliders and mounts and more expansive and meaningful maps.

Condition is awful now if you're anything except a confusion mesmer. As for PvE there is Revenant, which gives the whole team the capability of doing condition based debuffs.

>an angry furry erper's bot script will outlive the game it was created to shitpost about
So there's still a glimmer of bitter amusement to be had, after all.

Attached: 1550760061320.gif (266x199, 1.84M)

I'm aware of this, but I'm saying maintenance mode means you just have a couple devs on there to make sure things run smoothly and everything else is automated. Once a game is in maintenance mode you just don't have new content. but it can go on for years after that.

why wouldn't the expansions be the peaks? what do you think would ever sell more than an expansion? NC is probably the ones who were pressuring them to develop other games and funding those games. NC pulling funding for those projects to cover their own losses is why Anet is getting hit with layoffs, not because of anything Anet was doing. GW2 isn't going to suffer because it's a cash cow and not a money sink like those development projects.

last quarter the game pulled in $14 million, which was the low for the year. across the year that's at least $56 million, which was enough to pay their 400 employees an average of $140k salary. too bad for you, bitter manchild implications can't beat math.

>tfw the game dies just when you started drawing charr porn
feels shait mang

Should have just released more GW1 expansions.

Good. That’s what they get for making a WoW clone instead of a proper sequel to GW1 that had the same detailed skill set building, actual challenging pvp, and interesting world. I hope everyone involved in making GW2 never get hired again in the game industry so that they don’t ruin a proper GW sequel. They all deserve to burn.

don't worry, /tesog/ speaks about gw2 quite oftenly
