The suit is muscle suit - similar to how Crisis armour has synthetic muscle fibres - and it also has an energy field that extend over whole body and head. When the characters take heavy hits suit energy supply dies and the glowing bits liquefy so they are supposedly some kind of energy storage.

Throwing a bunch of exposed mechanical parts and pipes just looks horribly dysfunctional.
Maybe 30% of that design actually has plates that will protect you.

My sense of escapism requires a bit of practicality, so I agree halfway that realism can seem like a restriction to artistic freedom but at the same time even fictional armor or protective is allowed some design integrity if not at least a system that justifies said appearance.
