Video games aren't allowed to be fun anymore. Consoles have to be a dull black box that blends into the room so guests won't notice it.

I think Microsoft out of anyone should be able to take the initiative and make customizable consoles, they already let you design your own controller.

No, but "small batches" of anything mass manufactured often are. For example in plastic molding it's not the colors individually it's the differences and how it can fuck up a line, like if you use pink followed by some other color and you don't super fucking clean everything maybe some pink (or whatever else it was) ends up mixed in to some of the first runs.

Granted it's just a money issue and obviously nothing stops them from doing special edition small runs from time to time if they think it's worth it for marketing to they can just charge a markup to cover it. Maybe they'd even do it for Japan at some point if a game matched it but they're really getting into the NA serious bullshit now unfortunately.

PS2 was soulless because Sony went in no fun allowed mode for pretty much the entire gen and it was a massive success. So everyone else started going the same way because of the prospect their console selling as well as the PS2.
The moment companies started reselling the same console multiple time in a generation with different specs is the moment gaming became soulless.
It's making us feel like gaming is progressing slower than before, but it's just that they're pushing small updates every 2-3 years instead of one big update every 7-8 years.

Well they seem to be holding up just fine so there will probably be special editions that appear used for cheap as the gen gets older and next gen pops up. Or not used but just clearance maybe once retailers try to clear them out for newer shit.

i think they should try and take inspiration from cars when modeling their consoles. not shaping them like cars, but having a recognizeable shape with some interesting lines thrown in to make it look
complex but still adult like since theyre trying to appeal to everyone. make the shape more interesting but dont go full retard with it.

I don't mind incremental editions since they're usually just to get more people on board and aren't worth getting for day one buyers

Almost thought to mention that one as an exception and yeah, definitely an exception everyone fucking loved it and they barely made any so yeah that one will be pricey forever. Although maybe some comfort can be drawn from unlike previous gens this one isn't fully uniform so profags can still claim a better vidya experience.

This. I got really into Sailor Moon and bought a bunch of dolls at the toy store. My dad wasn't super thrilled, but he told me I couldn't show them to my uncle. I'm lucky I grew up with a dad who wasn't a jerk about that kid of stuff even if he wasn't super happy with it.

I still remember the kino of those consoles and their ambient music and abstract animated backgrounds. I hope that some day we get a generation of consoles that returns to doing that, it really gave the consoles some real personality. I find the current trend towards making the menus as dry and generic as possible really boring.

They were great because the interface made the console feel actually different from a PC. When you played on one of these you felt like you were playing on a machine that was built for gaming and gaming alone and that was awesome.

Playing on modern consoles feels like playing a shitty PC or an android phone/tablet thing. Not awesome at all.

Mmm... I'd say core millennial, and I'm not just saying that because I was born in '88. It's when 3d was just getting popular, and that was a huge game changer. Only thing after that that really comes close is internet connectivity, but that can't really replace playing with close friends.
