2 loses a LOT of points in my book for being the awkward middle child that introduced a lot of elements only to poorly flesh them out and relegate them to handheld titles
BBS is more self-contained, 3 does a better job connecting it all, even if it's terribly rushed

Nah. It's the only handheld title that didn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Being on DS handheld made it inherently clunkier than the console titles, but at least it emulated the traditional gameplay instead of bogging it down with shit that didn't work.

I don't think you understand the fact that Organization XIII was just supposed to be a bunch of randoms.
Them being Ansem's apprentices, two fuckwads who walked into Radiant Garden, and Four keyblade war survivors was written later.
Not only that Nobodies have never been that bad ontop of the fact that some of them are extremely memorable and have great personalities(if they had a heart) like Demyx, Xigbar, Xemnas, Axel and Larxene.
Some of the others are more hit or miss because they're so poorly presented with limited involvement or knowledge of them.
Also the fact that in KH2FM you really wondered if Axel and Roxas were ever going to be in some kind of afterlife together or if they were both just gone forever had some serious weight.

The only things that get “explained” later are retcons

No it didn't. They weren't characters yet.
All you saw of Axel was him being a dick and murdering people in CoM with a half-assed redemption in 2.
Roxas' only characterization was with a completely different life and different friends.

They're all good story and gameplay wise except days and recoded. Days only had a good story and xion. Recoded had fun gameplay but there was no reason for it to exist outside of the last scene which only progresses the story a very tiny amount.
