I feel like people overestimate how likely Assist Trophies. I feel that with some exceptions that it is once an assist trophy, always an assist trophy, considering that the more requested Assist Trophies seem to return, as well as more highly requested character get added as Assist Trophies each time.

Camelot likes money. That's the problem. They can use existing assets to churn out a Mario Sports game on a shoestring budget and it will sell millions. Meanwhile they can spend a bunch of money modeling hundreds of enemies and zones for an RPG and it will sell hundreds of thousands. So long as the Mario Sports games sell, there's no reason for Camelot to make anything else.

After Dark Dawn I don't even want a new GS game. It was a mistake in so many ways.
The story/lore was a mess. All of a sudden there's all these brand new cities that sprung up out of nowhere in the span of 30-odd years, there's suddenly a bunch of ancient ruins from civilizations we've never heard of before, including the Tuaparang which apparently are Dark Adepts despite this being a completely new element we've never heard of before. And out of the original party only Isaac and Garet showed up, and only for 15 minutes at the beginning living in a hut estranged from their wives. Some of the rest of the party (Mia, Piers, Ivan, Jenna) were relevant or mentioned but Felix and Sheba apparently both fucked off to who-knows-where. The mini dungeon that's basically a retelling of the first games makes me feel like they didn't expect most players to be familiar with the story so far.
Mechanically it was essentially identical to TLA. Despite over 8 years between TLA and DD, the Djinn and class system was entirely unchanged save for a paltry few new classes for some of the new characters, a handful of new Djinn, and 1 new summon. The only remotely significant difference was that weapons were given a weird level system but still had releases that procced randomly, which was a bizarre choice for a system to expand when weapon releases were already weird and unbalanced and the new system didn't really fix them.
I don't understand what they were trying to do.
If they wanted to revive the franchise and win new fans who weren't familiar with the originals, but also didn't want to change the mechanics at all, why not just make a combined remake of the GBA games?
If they wanted to tell a brand new story with brand new characters and lore, why not make a completely new game instead of taking the established world of Golden Sun and shoving completely new lore into it?

I think Dark Dawn was only Golden Sun for brand recognition. This "many years later" shtick is normally used when the main team that did the old games is no longer around and the new team wants to use the IP while not being constrained by the previous story. But it's pretty obvious whoever is at Camelot right now is incapable of doing the series justice. Likewise, Nintendo doesn't seem to give two fucks about the series either. It's a dead IP. I held out hope that Smash might give it the boost it needed but that's gone now.

A lot of the original game was probably lost in the transition from N64 to GBA, but we'll never know. The localization ended up turning Golden Sun into WORDS... though.

I doubt that would've really helped seeing how Dark Dawn had plenty of issues that had nothing to do with its status as a sequel.
