Actually, what "too video gamey" typically means is that the either the mechanics or the way those mechanics are conveyed seem contrived and bring the player out of the experience.

For example, let's say you come across a big ass fucking door. On one side of the door, is a glowing save point and on the other is a stock of items and weapons. It becomes blatantly obvious what is coming next, right? Now in a lot of games that doesn't matter. In Zelda? Yeah that's fine. But in something that is pushing for a specific atmosphere like Metroid, it can feel somewhat contrived.

This is part of why Super Metroid and Prime games typically place their save points closer to around half way through an area. This prevents them from heavily impacting the atmosphere the game is trying to present (as well as mechanically just working well with the often looping nature of Metroid world design).

tl;dr "too video gamey" means obviously contrived. Has nothing to do with cutscenes and being "cinematic".

The entire thread was jerking off Zero Mission as the best game ever because they had a waifu samus to jerk off to. Nobody was acknowledging the problems in the gameplay or any of the other issues. Nobody wanted to address the cramped environments, the game's forced linearity that punished exploration, the horrific unskippable cutscenes forced on you at multiple points.
