The thing is big companies have essentially rigged the critic and journalist process to essentially be one giant shilling machine. They can't pay you for good reviews, but have fun trying to get advertising if you're not at a constant state of dick sucking.

Accept anything talking about them positively is paid for by them and not all of it is disclosed as such so wrong.

Paid reviews just means the publisher is strong-arming the media outlet in some way, pressuring them to give scores the publisher deems high enough or reviews that hit certain talking points

EGM's EIC did a nice editorial about this way back in 2007 when EGM/1UP gave the first AssCreed a 7 and they were blacklisted by Ubisoft and a couple other publishers like Midway and Sony's sports game division for also giving their games unfavorable reviews or preview coverage.
