Maybe it's because I powered through this 2&3 in like a week, but I liked mask of deception, even the slower parts. They did a very good job building suspension.

Before playing I knew nothing about Utawarerumono save for that anime scene with Hakuoro grabbing Eruru's tail, then saw the game discounted in paletweb, back when it still existed, and googling revealed there was a translation patch.

I don't know if the anime is canon or not, but Munechika's mask was sealed by the Tuskur miko and she couldn't use her barrier there during the battle. In the game, Munechika comments that Tuskur knows how to fight against someone with powers (ie. because they fought against Witsernemitea).
Also Kamyu and possibly others know the On Riyak sealing spell which sealed Witsernemiea and could possibly also seal other masked ones like Ururu&Sarana tried with Vurai.

It might work but it would ruin the overall experience since the anime was garbage compared to the VN. Somehow it managed to feel both rushed and slow as fuck at the same time and it removed most character developments and important plot points. It's better to watch the anime after reading the entire series just for fanservice.

It's literally 15 minutes of Kuon pissing the bed and crying every day. That's it. That's the entire story. It's not even funny. It's completely pointless and worthless. I love this series and every part of it, but oh god I want to erase that shit from my memory.

Uruuru & Saraana, Atuy and Kiuru were ridiculously broken units once fully leveled. I never tried the Fumiriru healspam but I hear that it was also way too good.

Mostly an effective force multiplier, especially with her final strike. That speed boost is quite significant and lasts forever, thanks to water overzeal doubling duration.
Comes paired with a boost to unit maxHP too.
She can't show off against trash but is useful in a real fight.

Kiwuru got super nerfed in 3, and you have to baby him too much or use endgame items to build zeal.

Not nerfed enough. Attacking twice per turn with defense ignoring huge damage is just too good. Nosuri is not doing enough damage for a ranged nuker.

Ranged units were great for bossfights with a lot of AoE

Kiuru didn't seem so hot in 3 but perhaps he just got benched for too long in my game.

The hidden additional hit thing reminded me a lot of a mechanic in Paper Mario and I found it really fun.
In the end you don't remember the timing but rather the rhythm and it becomes natural.
Also yeah Kiuru was mega broken in Itsuwari no Kamen, but just very strong in the sequel.

Kiuru also didn't build Zeal so easy. If you get Nosuri's melee move in, with an obstruction behind her... it's double turns from overzeal for days.

Fumi's biggest draw was that her healing spells have a percentage of total health part, which means BIG heals for the fights where Hakushtoru is a giant.

Deception sucked and was only good at the end.

For a game that is 70% visual novel, I was surprisingly invested in the combat mechanics. I also really like how the gameplay is tied into the narrative. Like Haku starting out in MoD putting out barley any damage but in MoT he gets more and more useful as you progress through the game with him getting more in line with Oshtor. Really hits home how much effort he put in to play the part.

Not even close to her biggest draw. Her heal instantly gave the target next turn, or close enough.
When healed she gets a summon which heals and accelerates turn order slightly.
When other people are in overzeal, you can manipulate it so she combos into support moves with her move to gain free turns.
When her summon is in overzeal it can also contribute to this.
Free turns forever.

The only problem is the best unit is, once again, the worst character.

God Haku is so fucking good with gameplay/story integration. He's not used to his god powers so he's level 1 which is still strong for a god, and then him leveling up fast and getting crazy strong once he gets used to his new strength.

It was definitely 90% table-setting and buildup, and it failed to effectively explain half of the combat mechanics.
It was all worth it so we could have MoT be packed with action, though.
