Why do people like WoW again? I tried out a private server because a friend suggested it and the entire game is just

>speak to all the relevant quest NPCs
>grind mobs until I have enough bear hides/boar meat/wolf pelts/etc
>return to the quest NPC
>rinse and repeat ad nauseum
the music is great and I like how the world is designed geographically but how this gameplay was ever considered enjoyable is beyond me. It seems like the only reason a community grew around the game is because everything is shit to do solo so having at least one person helping out makes the experience slightly more bearable but still tedious

Personally i love the warcraft series.
Theres a sense of progression that you go through with your character, feels that you really earn the stuff you get. and when you get a rare drop you actually get a bit excited because, its either useful for your or you can make some decent coin out of it.
The world is more dangerous, you actually required to socialize and depend on other people to succeed.
Theres also plenty of things to do to rather than leveling you know?
There PVP, Low level pvp is particularly popular and also a decent way to get some gear.
Theres also professions you can level to make your life a little bit easier, make some gold, maybe even save up for that mount goal.
or you can´t just yuck it up and have fun in the chat, try to make some new friends, join a guild. or help other friends to catch up with you.
Its not about yourself only. its an MMO, the most literal sense of the world, probably the last real big one before blizzard themselves starting stripping away the MMO features little by little.
Theres more to the gameplay than just input. its more about fecision making and managing resources rather than diablo-esque dashes and abilities.
its perfectly fine if you dont like it. its a pretty archaic game by today standards and funnily enough, WoW started as a more casual option to the MMO crowd back then, so its amusing to hear people thinking of it as "hardcore".

Supposing you're talking about vanilla private servers, that experience is rather poor, though. At this point you can expect almost every quest to be technically completable for example, but if you pay attention to details at all, they tend to be poorly implemented or entirely absent (indeed, in the context of vanilla world content, open source emulation for Wrath is more advanced than any of extant vanilla servers). And these things do add up to influencing the experience quite a bit. In terms of endgame content it actually would be quite easy to one-up perfect Blizzlike implementation with custom tuned content that's non-awfully scripted, but vanilla servers tend not to have buffed content so that's not an advantage either. And then you have corrupt admins, demographic issues, and servers tend to either be megaservers with populations beyond what the game was designed to cope with (without even having the benefit of proper off-peak hours), or dead.

With right-click reporting, it’s all automated, meaning any GM with half a brain won’t look at it and say “wait these reports are bullshit”

Yeah, I can't speak for other private servers, but leveling on Kronos III has been a solid experience thus far. Can find groups to do pretty much anything. I even had a group with 4 Russians for RFD and it went silky smooth; they even stuck around for the tedious escort quest and the quest for killing trash outside the instance.
I don't plan on playing Classic, but it will be interesting to see how things pan out, for better or for worse.

It always led to Outland, it's from WC2. The title screen is meant to imply you are looking in on Azertoth from Outland, but I always liked to imagine it as when you log into the game, you are entering the Dark Portal to enter Azeroth.

I've always dream't of going back to the first time I played World of Warcraft, the first time I felt "happy", the first time I felt "peace". A world where I could be what I wanted be, seek what I wanted to seek. I made friends, heck I even made enemies, from the hills dun morogh to the sands of tanaris. I.. enjoyed.. every moment, from the moment I got my first mount.. when I grinded out that last piece of gold for my epic mount heh took long enough. Funny enough the only reason that paladin won that engagement was due to the fact nost had a scripting error where paladin's would build reckoning charges on certain crit procs they shouldn't have. In actual vanilla that paladin wouldn't have had all those rec procs and would have died.

can't speak for other anons but i rather enjoyed the world and exploring it in vanilla, all my friends that played in high school were alliance but i wanted to be a tauren so i picked horde and had to make friends with randoms but that didn't really both me, ended up playing the game long after bc came out and quit right before wotlk - the world and how expansive and fun to explore was my main draw, didn't even do a ton of raiding but simply liked running the 5 man dungeons with people and seeing how far i could get from one place to another - i played a lot of warcraft 2 & 3 growing up so it was super cool seeing that world in a new way that i could explore
