So you're saying a Mario game shouldn't be allowed to take liberties? The Mario RPGs have always been focused on narrative, characters, humor, and world (not claiming it's deep so don't be dishonest and misconstrue what I'm saying) than the mainline games. What's wrong with running with that as long as you retain the basic aspects of Mario, i.e., jumping, Mario, Bowser, Peach, and mooks? There's nothing wrong with introducing entirely new characters.

It's somewhat Miyamoto's fault but at the end of the day IS developed the game and decided to also remove the character from everything instead of just sticking to at least shit in Mario like Miyamoto advised. He also gave that advise to AlphaDreams and they mostly ignored it. Intelligent Systems also hasn't made a good game in over a decade (FE:Path of Radiance).

Radiant Dawn was great, although the lack of proper supports sucked the whole game wasn't bad for it. It was challenging, had great music, and followed up on the narrative from PoR.
New Mystery of the Emblem was also pretty underrated, it discarded most of what made Shadow Dragon bad. I guess "that doesn't count" because it's a remake though.

Nah Radiant Dawn could have been good. But instead the lack of supports, terrible balancing, overbloated cast, terrible characters and story elements keep it from being good. The only good elements are the challenging part 1 due to the Jobbing Brigade and music which all the FE games have.
