I've even seen people begin to suggest that Bojack's characterization around the Horsin' Around period is some kind of sloppy writing/retcon because they think he was just always sad(again, depression, parental abuse, basically any environmental scapegoats to remove any culpability on his part).

Well, really, his issues stem from his childhood and being raised in an abusive household. He got famous, and it didn't help; he still felt horrible, and this is shown throughout the whole production of Secretariat. The alcoholism, drug abuse, failed intimate relationships, manipulation of friends and peers and whatnot all stem from that.

Bojack's real problem is the same problem that all the characters have: he engages in fantasies that, deep down, he himself realizes are inherently unfulfillable. PC's trying to be the "career woman who can have it all," Diane's trying to be the one-man army for social change, PB just denying every bad thing and acting like his life is literally a cheesy sitcom, they all do the same thing, just in different ways. I'm not necessarily opposed to analyzing the nitty-gritty of Bojack's particular situation, but this tendency people seem to have of "ranking" who's the most messed up(as if that can be quantified), or who's the most "important," or even just presuming that Bojack is somehow the only character with meaningful subtext is just asinine.

Why do characters in TV shows always go for the worst romance options? It's as obvious as the sun that Carolyn is the best girl.

It's not a smokescreen; it's what destroyed his self-esteem that contributes majorly to his existential crises. Diane's come from a similar place. Hell, a lot of the main characters have shitty childhoods. Diane copes by trying to be part of something important, Bojack really doesn't cope and is still trying to figure shit out; Princess Carolyn tried to cope by working her ass off, and that clearly doesn't work-- It's pretty widespread.

And you're right in that the show isn't just about Bojack's past, but it's good to look into the lives of the characters to help show why they came to be. I don't think the show lost focus, necessarily. Bojack is actively trying to do better, and that's being shown.

I don't disagree, but as I said, there are reasons why the characters are doing that.

Well I guess "smokescreen" is somewhat disingenuous/dismissive, because by that metric literally everything everybody has ever done is just a smokescreen to avoid the absurdity of life(which it is, but looking at things from that viewpoint isn't helpful for generating discussion). It just annoys me that so many people seem to view Bojack's life as having some kind of definite arc when the whole point of the show is that those narrative tropes are just fantasies that don't actually exist. They act like Bojack is some kind of generic "hero" on a "quest" to overcome the "monsters" that were created from his past, and that once he can do that, he'll earn his "happy ending." Like Bojack himself wants to get lost in the fantasy that there is some kind of idyllic suburban family that exists, somewhere, and that he just happened to be unlucky enough to be born into a shitty family, when the reality is that every family is shitty in some way or another. But he'd rather believe that he's just a messed-up wretch than accept that he's actually relatively normal, because if he accepts that then it means that reality is a lot shittier than he wishes it were.

Well, no, that is kind of unavoidable with any fictional work. I'd obviously be lying if I tried to claim I was COMPLETELY uninvested in any of the characters. That being said, the sheer number of people who will justify literally any and all plot contrivances just to see their favorite characters get a happy ending is something truly disgusting to me. I normally avoid character dramas for that exact reason. BH has always occupied a unique and precarious position of, essentially, being a story about how unhelpful/unrealistic stories can be. In order to be more compelling and drive its point across more effectively, it has to rely on the same tricks to drive engagement that any other "fake" story does, thus undermining its own message. I imagine that when it does end, it'll either be a massive cop-out on its original premise, or generate an unholy shitstorm the likes of which the world has rarely seen.

This. PB is best as a Rorschach for Bojack. He's a happy-go-lucky guy who's always optimistic and things usually work out well for him. The only reason you'd ever hate him is if you're bitter and jealous because your own life isn't as blessed and perfect as his. And as you realize that PB is nothing more than a good boy that's doing his best, you realize that Bojack is far too cynical, to the point where he's mean to a guy who doesn't deserve it at all, a guy whose only offence is that he doesn't feel guilty about getting a good deal in life. I can't really see the rewritten part, he's always seemed the same to me, it's just that he's always getting involved with something new because that's literally how his attention span works.

I will say his much though and agree on the 2/3 thing as I really think that game show episode was some mighty fine dialogue between him and Bojack. Only thing is, that seems to be the climax of thier relationship and anything they do from there is just retread ground. I'd say it seems like the intent for MPB changes. In the first season, for instance, he seems a lot more like a sell-out and more malicious whereas he becomes way more benign in season 2 onward. He didn't change in-universe, he was just changed as a character.
The big thing that changed in Season 4 onwards is that they chose to start centering on issues that he didn't necessarily seem to have before, though whether these changes are rewrites or just character development is up to your personal interpretation. In Seasons 2 and 3, he seems really chill with just having Diane in his life and was mostly carefree, but Seasons 4 and 5 introduce his personal issues of strongly desiring external validation and constantly trying to retain his youth through dating women who are always young 20-somethings. While the events that these issues were built on were always present, that particular interpretation of MPB's life and actions wasn't really present until Season 4. Up till that point, he was basically a genuinely happy, content and down-to-earth guy and largely meant to show what Bojack might have been like if he hadn't been touched by trauma.

They try to justify it by saying "there's always more life" but most of life is pretty boring, mundane shit, especially once you settle your issues.
The biggest issue is Bojack, primarily, since he's the one who needs external validation the hardest. Mother fucker self destructed just because his super successful movie (that he isnt even in) didnt get nominated for an award.
The biggest gripe I have with S5 is that they start forcing MPB to be a worse person so that he can replace Bojack when Bojack goes to rehab.

Depends on how or why you found her character annoying. Most of her quirks come from her own hangups and the purpose of her being in Hollywoo in S4 but that's resolved by S5, so now we see her as Hollyhock the little sister.

The point of BH is that none of the characters truly want to be happy, because to them, life is all about excitement and intrigue, which are inherently antithetical to lasting happiness. Gina sums it up nicely right before her little number

But that's only really a thing that started in season 5. In seasons 1-4, it's implied that Katarina was just emotionally abusive, and Jessica Biel was too much of an elitist and ladder-climber to deal with his more mellow antics.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend that MPB's development has been the tidiest or most consistent, but I feel like it's always been suggested that there was a "dark" side to him, but they just couldn't quite put their finger on what it was supposed to be. Ironically, if anyone is supposed to be a token paragon of pure pureness in the show, it's probably Todd, whose sheer idiocy and ineptitude go so far beyond even MPB levels that he becomes an almost amoral force of nature rather than a character.
