The problem, (at least fans of K have, I'm not too fussed) is that that ending is the only new ending K has, meaning she has 2 bad endings, while Catherine has an extra happy ending with Vincent.

I picked Katherine my first playthrough. Wanted to go for Catherine on a second one but since I suck shit at the puzzle game I gave up before like the 3rd big choice. Didn't get to see anything different from my blue playthrough.

Hey, it's actually refreshing to hear that point of view. I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up more. I will say though, the point of the story (whether you like/relate to him or not) is to determine Vincent's future. Trisha says this much in the prologue so with that in mind, I'd still argue it's a bad ending, but you're absolutely right, purely from K's perspective it's a good ending for her.
Eh, the piano video you send K to get this ending (before it's explicitly explained in Rin's ending) is rumoured to bring whoever hears it, a future full of happiness, I can imagine, a player going in blind trying to get K's new ending think of a cool happy ending for her and Vincent then the actual ending happens.

There's nothing which really says the novel is or isn't canon.
It is interesting however, that the novel which came out about 8 years ago to coincide with the original game's release has an ending very similar to one of the new endings in the remake.
