Really not that bad but nowhere near as good as Painful. They just have a problem with Buddy going maximum edge. Painful's ost was great but Austin killed it with Joyful that ost alone is worth the playthrough. Also Big Lincoln and the ending from Yado onwards makes up for everything else. I still have difficulty listening to He's My Dad without choaking up.

I actually didn't have a problem with that. I thought it was pretty in-line with her character. During the entirety of Painful, Buddy has had absolutely no choice in anything. She had to do everything Brad decided for her and she doesn't even get the choice to be the savior because Brad fucked that up for her too. I always thought that her desire to be #1 in Olathe was a way of her to attain power. She felt powerless before and is trying to compensate for that through fighting and becoming #1.

It's much simpler than that. If you noticed by the end of Painful she was hard in the Joy. Joy makes you an absolute slave to your base desires and makes you stop at nothing to achieve them proven how Brad was able to stroll through an entire army trying to get to Buddy. Early game you get only so many firebombs and if you waste them all on Charmy then you're stuck having to fight the Mens Hair Club without them and if you try getting more you're then forced to fight those assholes who demand all your mags and will thrash you if you get bad RNG.

But I will give you that Pointless items are a little too sprace for their own good, Bottles were handled pretty well seeing as they're pretty much nukes when Joel throws them but stuff like status healing items being wasted and being left with a crippling status could be fucking game ending. I hope they fix it.

Really? I though Alex and Joel's abillties really complemented one another, you really needed to think about what you was going to do each turn. You can't just keep spamming dodge and taunt with Joel because you need to make sure Alex has the right timing to finish people off and dodge when at low HP.

Its miles better than Joyful. But yeah Painfuls party system was still more fun.

The abilities things is one of those things you need to really get a rhythm down for. I know that sounds like crap but it usually comes down to locking down one person with Joel with status effects and letting Alex wail on the weaker person.

However the whole softlocking thing is still a big issue. You could have really terrible RNG with one fight and end up with your party crippled because you're stuck with so many status effects. Yeah its difficult and for some people that makes it more fun but its frustrating as shit not having a simple way to get your party healed up fully.

Joyful is really a mixed bag because it confirms Brad was actually not the world's shittiest dad which I like because a huge part of the Lisa games is how well they write people like actual people, very few of us are complete heroes or complete pieces of shit. That being said, there's still stuff in the Joyful that just makes me roll my eyes. Buddy is so fucking lame, Brad having her kill that rando dude at the beginning is totally out of character, and they complete neuter Yado as a villain. But the Rando stuff is great, Big Lincoln is maybe the most badass boss in the whole series and Terry Hintz World is fucking incredible.
