things really were different. I know it sounds dumb but I swear video games were more "video gamey" then, than they are now. there was a healthy studio system pumping out unique and creative titles ranging from B to AA (I really don't think anything was comparable to the AAA budgets we have nowadays.) hell even some basically C or D tier shit like Drakengard could get published and still be worth playing. Sure, there was more crap, too - but you can just ignore crap. In 2018 there were like four games from big name publishers that I actually felt like buying. the rest were indies.

I don't think it's any exaggeration to say that if you had a PS2, a GameCube, a GBA, and a PC, good games were probably coming out faster than you could play through them. Nowadays there's way less altogether. And so much of it is creatively bankrupt AAA stuff that is just refining tired old formulas over and over to extract the maximum amount of money from consumers...

The gamecube kinda crossed eras. When it first came out in 2001, the late millennial kid culture was still going on with stuff like Courage the cowardly dog and Blink 182. However, by the time it was discontinued in 2007, we were entering the early zoomer era with Chowder and Soulja boy.
