Nearly 2 decades later, and AAA game devs still can't match up to loot game classics.
Take pic related as an example. Its just 4 levels. 4 fucking levels. And its still deeper the brainlet-tier shoot n' loot games of recent years. It helped that the game has actual classes which can do more than just pewpewpew. And the loading times, on goddamn 56k, were worlds better than some of the shit today.
Ever expanding graphical expectations and other gimmicks.
Gavin Rivera
>game companies get too big >investors buy them out >replace the original devs with mentally ill freaks and women
and the rest is history
Gavin Barnes
PSO episode 1 and 2 remaster please. Ill even take new combat from PSO2 but please give me a modern PSO Sega. I want official servers on a remaster. Its my only escape that can save me from Yea Forums
Jason Watson
>tfw modern games are so lazy they can't be bothered to drop a few holiday related decorations into their lobbies/worlds during the appropriate times
Thomas Nelson
I'm really hoping Babylon's Fall is what I think it is. The teaser trailer kind of implies that it's a four player coop ARPG. Loot games are only as good as their combat and Platinum are pros at that.
Nathan Campbell
Except most people played and/or remember the GC version because of retarded shit like this.
I had 2000 hours on schthack and had top 50 kills on the server for the final boss.
Christopher Foster
100% this, good graphics are just a fucking meme, graphics =/= game
Benjamin Collins
I still wonder how PSO managed to make a loot grinding game playable both online and offline, and yet these AAA companies dont allow that. In Division 1 you cant even mod in photomode without getting banned. Where did things go so wrong?
William Bailey
There are more than 4 levels in that game, user.
Michael Lopez
2000 was a mystical time can you believe it? I remember first seeing it in 2001 at a friends house and I remember seeing it in one of the Charlies Angles films a few years later. Man I miss being 10 and playing video games with that pre shit era world.
Landon Green
>Forest >Caves >Mines >Ruins ??
Hudson Richardson
Mate PSO had a massive issue with hacking because of that shit and you can't say it doesn't effect you personally if you ever trade or pick up strangers items they drop on the ground. Ruins economy of items and all sorts of shit.
HELLO GC BAB
Owen Brooks
Didn't you literally answer your own question. PSO was hacked to all hell and back because of that. You would go offline and use an action replay with your PC to make a duplicate of your save data and essentially make a copy of all your items, then trade the items offline with alts and rinse repeat to dupe as much shit as you wanted. Then you take them online and trade or do whatever. I should know I did this shit all the time
Shit on a server will never allow you to do stuff offline with your items
Jordan Gray
Only Sega would have the balls to release a console MMO in the days where even PC MMOs were still novel ideas.
Jason James
Can someone explain these absurd drop rates? are individual kills really quick or what
Josiah Foster
>he never played episode 2
Angel Young
You can play episode 2 and 4 on the Dreamcast, you fucking retard.
Chase Miller
To be perfectly fair episode 2 was fucking shit. I never touched those stages if it could be helped.
Wyatt Davis
This has to be bait DC only had Temple and Spaceship parts of EP2 in battle mode and nothing else.
Nope it basically made it you were really unique if you got a drop. This is on top of if you didn’t have the right color to farm the item.
Benjamin Morales
Kills are quick even solo, especially solo because enemy numbers scaled up with more players. Alot of the rarest drops however are locked not only behind rare enemies, but behind specific "IDs". A system in which the person who made the game would have drops based on their "ID". It encouraged switching up leaders and having multiple characters.
Can you not read the OP? GC/Xbox/PC versions weren't two decades ago. Hell, the OP isn't even taking PSO V2 into account. We're talking about the base game.
Owen James
Reminder PSO has active servers on the Dreamcast still
Parker Hernandez
>Phantasy Star Online HD >Crossplay between Xbone, Switch and PC Yes or no
Jackson Russell
Episode 2 is fucking great once you get endgame gear.
Daniel Lewis
>active servers on the Dreamcast still How many people is "active"? I can not believe it would be over any PSOBB server.
Tyler Nguyen
Hard pass.
Cameron Scott
bless you for posting this in symbol art
Ryan Thompson
Why?
Elijah Howard
no i cant read now leave me alone
Caleb Stewart
PSO isn't fun though. It used to be when you were a kid, but who wants to grind the same map over and over again now?
Zachary Gray
pso2 has this, only ps4 can't talk to switch users because sony is a bitch lol
Robert Ross
Funny you mention that in this regard. Guarantee you if you asked people what areas are in EP2 they would not know / forget about this one in pic related.
so i want to get into phantasy star i loved playing the universe demo back in the day and i emulated PSO 1 2 and 3 i was really charmed by 1 and 2 but the gameplay kind of got old quick for me and i don't like the card game play of 3 so want are some other good Phantasy Star other then the mmo?
William Johnson
Since you liked universe, play Phantasy Star Portable 2. If you speak Japanese or don't mind reading guides and shit play Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity.
Jace Adams
I've literally never seen this area, it looks more like a PSU area, what is this?
Leo Torres
Yeah what are the odds that Sega actually localized PSO for the west?
Matthew Watson
Tower is comfy with a good team.
Adam Thomas
You can't recreate the magic user.
Also the controls feel... well, they've always felt pretty awful. Even if we can stomach it for nostalgia sake, the masses will tar and feather it as they did Shenmue. The community will be there and gone in a flash.
In hindsight prob not the best video to show off towers, doesn't have it's unique ill gills enemy but likely thought you hadn't seen that hour long movie quest either which it's mere existence can be somewhat interesting as I expect even less people know about it than the Towers area.
Sounds about right honestly, western PSO/U has always been treated like the retarded unwanted step child by SOJ, with PSO2 they decided to not even bother in the end.
Elijah Allen
>western PSO/U has always been treated like the retarded unwanted step child by SOJ its fucked up but true, I wish they'd at least give us Portable 2 infinity and Nova instead of cutting us off completely but whatever I guess
Owen Green
>Die >Drop weapon >Party member grabs it and quits
>Don't die >Gamesharker does the heal pvp cheat and kills you >Grabs weapon and quits Looking back on it, DC PSO was probably both the most cancerous and best online experience I've ever had.
Jose Wood
Imagine a new PSO game that got the MHW treatment. God I hate Sega for making PSO2 a massive online advertisement for collabs.
Carson Phillips
>wants the MHW treatment >hates that PSO2 is a massive online advertisement for collabs this is a joke right
>my favorite private server is a decade old with no signs of disappearing soon but the owner is awol and the site to register new accounts is dead without him preventing anyone from joining
Ethan Cruz
looks like the area I had to farm sealed j sword
Matthew Thompson
PSO2 gets collabs every week. MHW gets them what, once every 2-3 months?
Sebastian Bell
Why wait for a remaster when you can relive the legend? PSO Ephinea is still active (albeit with a small community) with tons of improvements, no hacks or cheaters, and it's completely free. They never ask for donations or anything. So go download it again and have a good time! We (and by "we" I mean me and one other person) even have a Team setup so you can see when other Yea Forumsirgins are online and playing.
I disagree. Perhaps it's nostalgia, but I started playing on Ephinea about a month or so ago, and I've been hooked again ever since. There's just something so addictive about the gameplay. It's just a slower paced and comfy feeling you can't find in modern games. And once you get into V.Hard/Ultimate difficulty and start hunt for rares to show off, the hours consumed can just fly by.
The whole drop equipped weapon thing was kinda fucked up, promoted people to wish you got fucked up instead of helping so they could grab your shit. If you were even using your good shit in the first place considering.
Also you could flat out kill people without gamesharks outside of battle mode in v1 or v2 I forget which. You had to shortcut cast resta and immediately replace the shortcut to some damage tech or something.
With BB the only penalty that was left was losing some percentage of EXP on death and I think held meseta (or that was GC only) losing % on death made "hard" areas like EP2 in general even less desirable to play on.
Leo Green
Dude moderation is good, PSO and PSU also had collabs sometimes, PSO2 is never NOT having a collab.
Pso2 also gets non collab content added every other week where as Monhuns actual updates are every few months
it also gets updated content wise literally every week when those older games got updated like once a month or none at all because sega fucking hates us gaijin see: eternal christmas
Jonathan Ross
Never
Tyler Ramirez
so it's just PSU for psp? cool but i don't have a psp and it looks like hub areas aren't roamable that suck they were so comfy i think i'll just get a PS2 copy of universe any others like universe or am i out of luck?
Daniel Nguyen
Isn't PSO2's endgame just sitting in the lobby and waiting for emergency missions to spawn or has it changed?
Gavin Taylor
Portable 1 is like a port of universe I think? Portable 2 is set in the same universe but with its own story. It has a small hub thats roamable, I haven't played portable 1 though.
Caleb Martinez
>eternal christmas I wonder really how many people even remember or know about that. It was like the Xbox servers had christmas lobby on for a year right? People even got banned complaining about it on the official forums (rip, they are gone)
With something like that alone it should really show how much Sega doesn't give a shit about it's western PSO side. And I seriously hope no one thinks it was just a long time ago they could of changed when you look at the situation and communication about western PSO2.
Benjamin Perry
Why not just grab the PC version of PSU? IIRC you can't play Ethans story but you can still make your own character and do the sp aoti stuff. Clementine will EVENTUALLY be playable, too(I hope).
Brayden Ward
Last time I played it was that too, but been a few years for me.
It's very easily emulatable on a potato of a computer or even a mobile phone if you wish. But on universe, if you never heard about the expansion there was Ambition of the Illuminus.
Jason Rogers
Endless quests, Limited quest, Ultimate quests, and then EQs yeah
Xbox players got stuck with christmas lobbies for a year, Sega blamed Microsoft and Microsoft blamed Sega for not being able to update or some shit. People got banned on the forums complaining about it yeah. Also NA servers having 0 moderation and getting shut down long before JP servers ever did just shows how much sega cares about NA PSO/U
John Price
dman that does look good guess i need to learn Japanese now
Anthony Parker
Portable 2 has its own story and new shit compared to Universe.
"Portable 2 Infinity" has its own story on top of that and other new shit compared to "Portable 2", but Japanese only. You could just enjoy Portable 2 and hope any year now the dudes making the English patch for Infinity get done with it.
Nathaniel Sanders
>wanting PSO on modern pc/consoles Only if they keep it text/symbol chat only. No voices. Period.
Lincoln Carter
Portable 2 has an english release so you should probably check that out before trying infinity. I think you can transfer save data over to infinity if you ever want to start that.
Chase Clark
Hello >Everybody
Additionally reminder that existed and now doesn't and didn't in PSU really shows how much of a shit SOJ could give about anyone outside of Japan after the initial attempt in DC PSO to have an everyone server to immediately close themselves off in a JP only server.
Jordan Walker
Infinity is great but no replacement for PSU proper. Literally all of the missions are scaled down with cut rooms and encounters all over the place. There's no mid or end-point lobbies. Nor the casino. They went back to garbage droprate tier PSO-style discs for skill improvements. And the lack of online compared to PSU just makes you wish you were connected to the real deal. iirc JP PSU eventually got most/all of the Portable 2/Infinity content and then some. If only there were a way to bring all of that back.
Christopher Perry
>played xbox for a time >go into lobby >little girl singing atrociously over the terrible quality voice >tell that stupid bitch to shut the fuck up >other retard in lobby trying to defend her garbage singing what a fucking weird time, man.
The preset communication macros owned. Not only that, they were auto-translated into other languages, so people from different places could still communicate and slay some baddies decently enough.
Nathan Brooks
Personally prefer disk drops compared to feeling obliged to spam the same shit ad infinity to level anything up.
JP PSU got a lot of the portable content yes but could not carry over unique stuff like the new weapon types, Dumans and their unique ability and Humans/Newmans with their Mirage Blasts and also the whole dodge & chain mechanic they added, but you might dislike those anyway as I know some people do.
ok but i don't know any trustworthy emulation sites now that emuparadise got axed
Nolan Moore
>lack of online the PSP games had online though?
Luis Cook
I can live without the chaining (and seriously borked hitbox detection of guns depending on your characters height) but the dodge mechanic is welcome. The portable games are great for single player but I've not managed to reach max level in any of them, DS one included, because there's just no drive to. And they feel so empty when thinking back to times long gone.
Brandon Powell
does it got that comfy hub?
Ethan Lewis
They did and still do of course it's impossible to find anyone without specifically gathering friends. There is a PSP2i Discord though last time I looked.
Because microtransactions/lootboxes. Any loot found in the base game of a modern looter is inevitably chump shit compared to what you can pay for. Diablo III will never live the shit it tried to pull down.
Logan Sanders
Has there seriously not been a single fucking PSO game after PSO2? I did see something called phantasy star nova but even that was 5 years ago
This is fucking ridiculous where the fuck is phantasy star portable 3?
Angel Garcia
There were unique bosses and areas too, PSU got some of the areas but not all IIRC.
Also any PSO fans here who know nothing about any of the other games should see this at least, might interest you a bit. youtu.be/alJB1v-m3-I?t=617
>Except most people played and/or remember the GC version because of retarded shit like this. No, most people remember the GC version because fucking nobody owned a DC. And the play"styles" of both groups were the same in the end anyway regardless of "improved" droprates. People spent hundreds of hours spamming TTF to hunt the same shit, droprates be damned.
Logan Gonzalez
>Ill even take new combat from PSO2 But that's the biggest and main thing wrong with it. If you kept everything in PSO2 the same but gave it PSO's combat it would be a vastly improved game.
Jace Williams
Phantasy Star Nova was also pretty much Monster Hunter: Phantasy Star Version
Bentley James
PSO2 is an mmo though just release another single player game. The network features on portable games are just shoddy adhoc trash, it's not going to kill the MMO sales
Levi Jenkins
>Also any PSO fans here who know nothing about any of the other games should see this at least, might interest you a bit. >youtu.be/alJB1v-m3-I?t=617 No. Stop trying to pander to those fuckers. They're the genwunners of online PS fandom. PSU stood up on its own quite well in its first year, yet people cried "muh ragol" and so from the expansion-on it became a non-stop PSO wankfest and this continued into the portable titles.
Dylan Wright
I'd actually want to see PSO on mobile, the control scheme would actually sort of work for it I think
Well shit that's pretty nice, but hasn't that project been going on for years now?
Mason Sanchez
For all the people saying try BB, believe me I have. Multiple time on multiple servers for the past decade. I just can't stick with it. I don't want to grind out Episode 1 shit AGAIN. And as history repeats itself, people in general refuse to touch Ep2/4 sides of things. Nevermind how devoid of life lobbies are compared to yesteryear. Its just too depressing to start over again, and again.
Carson Fisher
End yourself for even bringing up such retarded shit flinging. These games have been out for a long ass while now and there is no harm in showing PSO fans something they might like to try out PSP2i.
Adrian Moore
they did release a game after pso2 though, NOVA
Jason Perry
Yeah but it pretty much got rebooted (and already is where it was) recently to no longer be a emulated client but it's own thing.
So no longer are they trying to coexist with current PSOBB clients to be able to play side by side for example but making their own client and servers. This would allow for custom content without permission from say Ephinea server for example.
They apparently also did this because emulating how the actual client worked was being a major pain in the ass because of Sega and their magic coding for how a lot of things were handled online in PSOBB.
Tyler Taylor
>they might like No user, they won't like it. They didn't like it in PSU, and Infinity's variant is essentially the same exact thing. They're not the full levels by any means, at least half the roster of enemies are missing and replaced by PSU variants, the only "returning" bosses are the Dragon (which is a reskin of a PSU boss) and Olga Flow. Even if it were literally the entirety of PSO within PSU/P they still wouldn't like it due to the combat and whole rest of the game surrounding it.
Jack Butler
Well that's pretty good news then, hopefully Sega doesn't C&D it for some retarded reason
Kayden Cox
Why did Sega stop localizing PSO games?
Isaac Gray
PSO was fucking garbage mate. It was babbies first "MMO" on consoles.
Aaron Davis
>It's a Towards the Future episode Sometimes I'd forget this game even had other quests. The best times I had are after I refused to play that quest anymore.
If you didn't look at how old that post is and how it also doesn't include the atrocities they performed with the PSU era but it is in a thread about one.
Noah Thomas
>>It's a White Dragon episode >Sometimes I'd forget this game even had other quests. >The best times I had are after I refused to play that mission anymore.
Cameron Stewart
PSO had some fun obscure sidequests that a lot of people didn't know about like this 1 hour long movie quest and stuff like general really strange stuff like a board game set in forest 2, you would actually roll dice and shit.
>and stuff like general really strange stuff I had a stroke writing this post, I'm off to bed.
Cameron Sullivan
When I think of oddball stuff about PSO I always think of the Burning Rangers quest where you gotta run around putting out fires to the Burning Rangers theme. Also those discs you could get that played music for everyone in the area with you. Funny to play some anticlimactic as fuck music during the final boss. PSO had weird obscure as fuck secrets. It's the kinda shit MMOs need I think, but most MMOs are so focused on ease of use these days.
Oliver Moore
Never forget the NiGHTS quest and Rappys Holiday mini-game fest.
Owen Diaz
I miss psu so bad bros. I want to save lumia, laia, lou, leo, and tylor again. I want to slam shit around with my axe. Do flips with my twin claws. Why is there literally no fucking games like pso/psu? The simplicity is the key and yet every dev has to complicate what should be an easy to process and understand genre
William Fisher
I lied because I was trying to find the rappy board game quest as it was bugging me and its not rappy's holiday but instead
Did you know you can control the Dragon Boss (Ult ver) too, in everybody's favorite quest? TTF by doing some shit with an npc and a terminal at forest 2?
To be fair PSO had 4 full RPGs to pull lore and mechanics from. Silver Age Sonic Team/ Wave Master developers and sound designers. And existed before the mandatory need for voice acting, modern social media, gatcha market, wide spread advertising and current digital enterprise.
Julian Collins
really wish pso2 control their content properly, now the game is at 70gb, hope they won't do this shit on pso3
David Jones
>all of the toward the future grinding i had to do to get my red ring >will have to grind it more to get the last one i need
The only Phantasy Star game I've played was Phantasy Star 0 for the DS. I dind't play much of it, but I enjoyed what I played. How much does the english patch for PSO2 translate and how easy it to get into PSO2?
Jaxson Rogers
it's almost impossible to get anyone to do the other secondary quest in TTF with you and even when you do it's usually bugged to shit and wont give you the luck mat prize cause you werent next to each other enough
Jordan Robinson
Is that the love one where a male and female character need to stay near each other constantly? It's funny I remember PSU having the same shit and it was a broken mess there too.
Grayson Thomas
This video shows the exact problem with PSP2/Infinity. The content is there and they are extremely well done small scale conversions from a 360/PC game to a PSP game. They are bursting with missions, weapons, enemies, customization etc.
But the guy playing seems pretty competent and knows what to do. He also seems to be a hunter. So why does he keep having to switch to a rod to give himself Safoie? Because without those spinning fire balls, he would be hitting garbage damage. It strains your PP, makes you constantly to switch to rods if you're a hunter/ranger, and makes a lot of old PAs useless. If someone could just make a mod for PSP2I that takes away the chain system and makes it so you always hit your max damage potential, they would be infinitely better games.
Zachary Powell
user if your only experience with Phantasy Star is the DS game the last thing you should play is PSO2. Play PSO Ep1&2 since it takes most of it's play style from that.
Matthew Perry
It sucks that quest's big reward at the end (ragol ring) if you did everything right is a fucking 12* SCAPE DOLL shield equip. You die with that shit on you and it's gone.
its only like few clicks, just download the fan launcher from arks-layer.com, im not sure i recommend it though the game is fucking garbage after ep5 and you have to download 70gb, all that content still manage to bores me than psobb
Elijah Sanders
>You die with that shit on you and it's gone. I love that kind of shit in games. Like PSU weapon grinding with a chance to perma-destroy them before Sonic Team went all pussy mode with the game.
Aaron Clark
How much does that patch translate?
Ryan Hughes
>I haven't played portable 1 though. Portable 1 was basically like Persona 3 PSP but still had animated cutscenes. Wasn't bad though, still worth a play. I did prefer Portable 1's story over 2's
pretty much all important shit, but its still not full english you can still see runes
Brody Wright
>using action reply to dupe items >not just dragging an npc to a shop counter, opening the shop window and allowing you to freely move to the bank so you can deposit stuff in the bank and drop it on the ground simultaniously.
Git gud
Jason Sanders
>Vivienne Reminds me didn't JP PSU have some way to connect to the PSP game for that one quest she had in PSU that built her personality IIRC while of course non JP server never got that option?
Julian King
You should have played the original PSO on DC then, dying had you drop your equipped weapon which meant any other party member would probably jack it. Effectually you can think of it as being deleted.
Brayden James
Obscure fact that no one remembers, PSO2 wasn't their first attempt at advertisements with big screens.
Also a message from PSO itself for everyone in this thread longing for the past youtu.be/R73x9v0AZ3U
I've always wanted to give PSO a shot. Is this Ephinea server all that active and are there any mods/plugins I should be aware of?
Jaxson Bell
Sega doesn't C&D fan projects, so they're good.
James Sanchez
my autism drove me to purchase a sealed copy of pso ver.2 for the dreamcast in 2012
two friends and i took the goddamned time on my dreamcast to actually connect to schthack and play it out - i had coincidentally already bought the needed web browser disk for $5 as a meme
to this day i still just play pso for like 1-2-6 hours because it's the absolute most relaxing thing i have in my house
Game legit has shit gameplay. I don't know how you fags can still pretend this game is even close to fun.
Colton Sullivan
>And its still deeper the brainlet-tier shoot n' loot games of recent years. What makes it deeper? I've never played PSO and I'm only vaguely aware of Western AAA loot shooter design.
I remember being excited the first time I got a varista.

This is the cruelest image ever.

Neat, thanks.

>endgame i refuse to accept PSO2 has endgame, because it doesn't. Handholding piss poor easy themepark shit is not endgame. SOJ needs to kill themselves and take all the autists that play that moronic trash with them.
