When I was a kid I preferred to him more as a giant monster you had to overcome, but now I prefer his Paper Mario N64 and TTYD incarnations most where there was a bit of a humanizing side to him but still has his duties of ruling the koopa kingdom and being a monster.

Like a really nice guy if you are part of his family or just are a very good minion, maybe having a bit of a devil may care attitude.
And on the other hand he is a giant menacing and calculative beast with a threatening aura if he considers you an enemy.
