Which do you think is better, Super Metroid or Castlevania Symphony of the Night? Both are in my top 10 but I think I prefer SM by a hair.
Which do you think is better, Super Metroid or Castlevania Symphony of the Night...
SM is far better. SOTN has too much filler and most rooms/paths lead to some shitty item that isnt useful
SM is great for speedrunning and shit, which is cool, but the core gameplay is inherently boring. SotN for me.
You know whats even better than both of these?
I do.
I don't think it's close either. SotN just has plain awful, highly repetitive level design, an incredibly linear opening and there's little platforming to speak of, so the various monsters and random secrets are the only things there to entertain you for the most part.
SotN had me instantly hooked so I played it again and again over the years.
Hollow Knight had me bored to tears so I quit during the first hour.
I like Hollow Knight but no
im not here to argue whether La mulana or HK is better, i haven't played Mulana im not gonna pretend i did, but why exactly were these 2 metroidvanias pit against each other?
If HK has a massive flaw its the starting area. The forgotten crossroads can really turn people away but once you get past that it gets fucking good.
Super Metroid I guess. Neither are the best in their respective series.
This is better than both.
Super metroid is fun but it hasn't aged as perfectly as people say. the lack of a weapon wheel makes selection a fucking chore. samus controls awfully. Great game but its much more flawed than people think.
SotN isn't that good.
SOTN is the game I've replayed a lot for all the powers and shit. SM I've only played a couple of times but it's a masterpiece. They're both games that should be played by everyone in my opinion, at least anyone who wants to be taken seriously.
SOTN is too easy, so SM.
found the zoomers.
>They're both games that should be played by everyone in my opinion, at least anyone who wants to be taken seriously.
yeah I'm sure people care that you've played with some childish toy
SotN, mainly cause I prefer the gothic aesthetic over the space alien aesthetic.
metroid is way better. but SOTN has some cool things, like this girl
Super Metroid and Symphony are both fine games, but I like other games in their series more. Fusion and PoR are some good shit.
La Mulana can barely even be considered a metroidvania, it's more of a Zelda-like given how 90% of the stuff you find is just items with single specific uses rather than powerups for the player character.
I got that whirlwind sword from those ghost things in the inverted castle, bloody hell that thing was OP
Fusion was more intense but I thought SM was the better game, and whereas I agree with you on PoR, I thought OoE was even better
SotN has the better presentation but SM is the better game.
There's less content, but it feels more substantial and less easy to break.
found the indieshills. HK is nowhere near SM.
SotN is indeed a very unfocused game. It throws in as much shit as they felt like on a whim, all kinds of special commands and secrets and equippables and enemies, and it's just for the sake of cool one-off shit.
It's all fun, but it lacks the focus that lends to a better game, Aria of Sorrow nailed this.
Virgin please. Girls dig a man that knows his Metroidvanias
SotN in a heartbeat.
if you said castlevania id accept that. but SM has such glaring flaws that claiming its the best metroidvania is insane.
Shitty weapon select
god awful jumps and control. Samus feels like dogshit
Its a good game but very flawed. Zero mission and Fusion are an overall improvment over super metroid.
Super Metroid is superior in map and progression design with a higher skill ceiling, so I'd go with that.
Fuck off Pat
Just because Samus doesn't move as fluidly or as quickly as Alucard or other platformers, doesn't mean the controls are bad. It's just an alternate system that you're not used too. They're perfectly fine.
who the fucks pat? im genuinely curious i love when people assume who i am on Yea Forums
The GBA Castlevanias are better than SOTN.
SOTN was a great concept and is a highly influential game but it's flawed as fuck and hasn't aged well.
Games don't age, zoomer, and if they do SotN certainly has it.
I played it last year and it holds up perfectly fine.
*certainly hasn't
The only actual flaw you presented is the wepon select. I don't kbow what's so bad about the controls though. I found it very innovative a satisfing especially with walljumping and shinesparking.
Usually I find SON better, but after I found Super Metroid Project Base + GBA Physics this rom hack is now my favorite game.
T. newfag
the walljump is fine when you get the hang of it. but playing as samus has always felt like shit, shes big, clunky, and slow, but her jumps are the polar opposite. actually dodging attacks is so difficult they just give you a shitload of health instead of giving samus better control. I constantly fuck up easy jumps because samu's jump is so bad.
>doesnt know my very specific Yea Forums thing
user i could care less if im a newfag just tell me who pat is i genuinely want to know.
maybe you just need to git gud
>slow
genuine tard
HK is good but its replay value is hurt by how slow it starts. meanwhile i always play through SotN at least once a year and also casually speedrun SM (along with other metroid games) for fun
SM trounces SotN on level design for the most part, but SotN just feels better to play. Your attacks aren't a pathetic pea shooter, your jump arc doesn't feel like a petal fused with a rock, and taking damage actually has knockback. Yes I see that as a positive over SM despite the knockback sending you into another room occasionally.
Fuck the tism is strong with this one. If you are going to die if I don't tell you than fine. Pat is the short ginger fuck that was formerly part of Super Best Friends Play and shills HL so bad I almost don't want to play it. Almost.
Symphony of the night laid the groundwork and the art assets for the rest of the series for the next decade.
But it really doesn't feel like a complete game. Between how easy it is to sequence break everything (to the point where you can skip half the fucking game without realizing it) and how most of the powers and abilities are so underused an ineffective, the game feels like some indie steam project a lot of the time.
>GBA physics
eww
SotN isn't even the best Metroidvanis - Aria is much better and the others have their advantages too.
Taking damage doesn't just have knockback in SM, you can exploit the knockback to boost your movement speed.
i beat the game but "git gud" doesnt excuse bad game design. HK is diificult but fair (except the final Pantheon) With metroid my deaths didnt feel deserved because i was trying to dodge while akwardly cycling through weapons or my jump went to far. the spin jump feels like shit.
The start is only slow the first time. when you know what to do you can get out of the crossroads in less than 20 minutes.
okay thank you for the answer. trust me people shill it so hard because its good. I understand that though i reject shit because people wont shut up about as well. like the office or CSGO way back.
Pat makes me think of ingeniousclown
>can't even jump correctly
>"I-it's the game's fault I suck!"
>I was trying to dodge
litteraly when
the regular jump is easy to control but you get way less forward momentum and cant walljump.you know in sonic 06 how when your falling your always moving in a direction? the spin jump is like that and you have to move left and right just to stay even slightly straight.
lets give an example. the maridia boss. that fight would be insane without the grapple beam trick because dodging him is a hellish endeavor.
Literally just learn to manage your momentum. Want a little speed, spinjump from standing. Want a lot of speed, do a little run first. Kids figured this shit out playing the original Sonic.
>you know in sonic 06 how when your falling your always moving in a direction? the spin jump is like that and you have to move left and right just to stay even slightly straight.
Sounds like you're describing the GBA physics here bub. They're the ones with the extremely fixed spinjump arcs.
holy fucking litteraly git gud holy fuck. you just need to morph ball to dodge Draygon and then shoot it's web things are you litteraly brain dead? You don't even need to jump in that entire fight. Now that's next level reatrdation.
