The focus was on the gamepad but the gamepad itself was just a glorified menuscreen that drove the price up. Not even Miyamoto himself could prove that the gamepad had potential.

The marketing did play a role but it wasn't the sole reason it was such a big failure.

Oh, and region locking. It was a complete piece of shit hardware wise.

Pokemon probably releases more frequently, though. Not many of the games were enticing enough alone to justify the purchase, at least not the ones that were known about.

The problem with WiiU was basically that, in terms of first party software, it was a platform of rehashes and spinoffs first and foremost. Zelda just got a spinoff and two ports until way too late, Mario just got NSMB and basically 3D NSMB (3DW was a good game but it wasn't anything noteworthy like the other 3D games were besides Galaxy 2), Star Fox just got a botched rehash, Pokémon just got a spinoff, Animal Crossing just got a detestable spinoff, Smash was an arguably weaker repackage of the 3DS companion game, etc. The fresh stuff didn't get the marketing it needed to thrive.

Ironically the Switch outright rehashes a lot of WiiU but it succeeds at rehashing since it gets actually marketed to feel fresh for a far larger audience, and such rehashed content is often clearly shown as AN ADDITION to attractive main content, not INSTEAD OF.

The switch has had such low momentum in the US since launch that I don't doubt its one of the reasons for reggie wanting to retire. He's appeared depressed since E3 2018.

While I did enjoy the Wii U, the gamepad made it rather overpriced, as much as I enjoyed comfy bed gaming sessions with it. Plus, most of the time its gimmick went beyond a quick inventory/map it actively ruined games, look at Star Fox.

I would argue that the tablet (and therefore the console) looked pretty dumb and was a gimmick that they didn't use to its full potential, but overall yeah they marketed it pretty poorly.
