I don't think you are, never got past it myself. They probably didn't want to develop whatever was supposed to be behind the door so they just locked it behind an unsolvable puzzle instead to be lazy.

really, wizards have so many ways to avoid or ignore encounters that it's not even an issue. You even have infinite stunlocking potential.
