Not only was the plan suicidal in the first place, Alistair and the MC were so late to light the beacon that the wardens and Kings guard had already taken heavy losses to the point that they'd be sacrificing the Fereldan military to save a few wounded and half dying men.

It's the wardens fault for keeping two very important pieces of information a secret. That they can detect darkspawn and thus verify whether or not a true blight is happening, and what happens if a non-warden kills the archdemon.
Loghain couldn't have known that this was a true blight (and outside of the wardens senses, there was no evidence of it being one) or that he would need wardens to eventually slay the archdemon. Not to mention that by the time the beacon was lit, the initial force was already so pulverized that it's doubtful any battle ready wardens would have remained.

Loghain fucked up plenty after the battle at Ostagar. Turning away aid from other wardens, enslaving elves to tevinter, instigating civil war, and using arle Howe as a right hand man to name a few. But he made the right call at Ostagar. Of this I have no doubts.

Up to you. Personally I go KE because even though its dull, being able to solo a dragon on the hardest difficulty is handy. Less trying to micromanage party members into not dying. It also does massive damage to armor, which nearly everything has on that difficulty.
