Is SAO the anime that fucked up the entire anime industry?

After SAO created the Isekai genre, there has been and endless supply of Isekai anime

Isekai was around long before SAO was a thing, SAO just exploded in popularity and thus set the tune for modern isekai.

Sao isn't really an isekai.

SAO was the culmination of the "survival" boom of the late 2000s. The only relation SAO has to the isekai boom that came after it was merely the idea that web novels can be turned into light novels and just that.
The actual isekai forerunners were Log Horizon, Overlord, Re:Monster, and Knights' & Magic. Others need not apply for that title.

>fucked up
You mean improved?

Isekai existed in the 80s and 90s and SAO isn't an isekai.

>SAO was the culmination of the "survival" boom of the late 2000s.
I hate how ecelebs memed this misinformation and made everyone believe it.

According to the author of rezero narou that web novel publishing site that led to many isekais being written began as a fanfiction site. A common fanfiction story was that someone else other than Saito mostly self-inserts was summoned by Louise. It later evolved to many iseki stories being written there. It seems that the rezero author claims that Zero no Tsukaima was responsible for the isekai boom.

>It seems that the rezero author claims that Zero no Tsukaima was responsible for the isekai boom.
Which outs him as a newfag when the real boom was from touhou fanfics.

>SAO created the Isekai genre

I don't get why isekai haters whine so much. If you hate a show just skip and ignore it.

Attention whoring and virtue signaling how "objectively good" their taste is.

Were you born yesterday?

>almost 10 years later
>people still have an irrational hate against sao
We just keep winning saochads

literally only because of that digibrony series shitting on sao
multiple youtubers kickstarted their entire careers shitting on sao after that

>After SAO created the Isekai genre
What

>multiple youtubers kickstarted their entire careers
And why do you know this? Don't tell me you actually follow that eceleb garbage, user.

>multiple youtubers kickstarted their entire careers shitting on sao after that
More the reason not to watch them

Is really funny how the light novel was pretty liked here and had serious discussion and as soon the anime comes out it attracted all kind of cancer thanks to youtubers.
Everyfucking time something gets an adaptation it attract a bunch of subhumans, spyxfamily being the last case of it.

>light novel was pretty liked here and had serious discussion
I should look up Sword Art Online before 2012 on desuarchive.

Lucky Star, basically made little girls doing pointless shit MASSIVELY popular and profitable.

normalfags and ironic weebs are cancer, nothing new here

The "misinformation" lies with SAO supposedly being the source of modern isekai, which it isn't. All you need to do is to actually compare SAO and isekai. There is nothing similar besides the most surface-level comparisons like "MUH OP MC" which doesn't really have much variety besides "underdog MC" or "MC comparable to antag", or maybe "non-combatant tactician MC" anyway.
But when you compare something like BTOOM! with SAO, the similarities become obvious in an instant. Infact they have a similar beginning that's more similar than isekai share among each other supposedly.

Yes. It's what got all my normie friends into anime. Fuck that despicable series. AoT is just as bad.

>SAO
>Isekai
LOL
No

>SAO is isekai
It's a rom com with a science fiction backdrop
>First, I apologise for choosing to do a two-parter arc after we already had one with the Floor Six Arc. When I began writing it, I had optimistic thoughts in mind: "Let's just write about casinos and beaches to bring this story to a smooth end in a single volume."; however, this was then followed by 'Ugh, we're taking quite a lot of time getting to that casino', then 'well, now we're here, but I smell a scheme in the air here', and then 'uh, I can't just leave the key that was stolen back in volume six unaddressed, now can I?', and so the book got very volume-y; by the time I realised this, I was already writing an email to my supervisor: "Two-parter arc please......".

>The biggest reason why this story swelled up so much was, I guess, because I awfully enjoyed writing scenes about Kirito and Asuna travelling, fighting, and eating together, just the two of them...

Imagine doing the soft reboot to SAO and fucking it up by repeating the same exact mistakes. SAO was good when it wasn't doing romance bullshit with true mary sue self insert Asuna.
The supposed best arc of SAO immediately went to shit the moment she got involved.
Hell, the anime adaption of SAO's supposed best arc couldn't even be half as interesting as an adaption that came from a fucking game and written by Nasu who is known as one of the biggest autists ever.

Btoom! is rarely talked about nowadays but I've often heard it being similar to SAO. People called Log Horizon and Overlord SAO done right when they came out. Maybe that's a reason why people claim that SAO started an isekai boom?

The sad thing is that most people don't even realize the social commentary behind some sao arcs. rich assholes being rich assholes, lack of mental health care in greater society, high society and business being cock full of nepotism, how japanese like to sweep everything under the rug or turn a blind eye, people opening pandora's box by creating something that didnt need to be created like nukes and AI,

Which is retarded because log horizon is only vaguely similar and only around the first arc of both and overlord is it's own thing entirely.

>log horizon
>SAO done right
Yeah if you want to read a fucking spreadsheet that has no fucking substance in it.
I love dot hack, but im not going to go around saying that it is the best thing ever because i know deep down that it is one of the worst and most BORING talk anime to ever exist.

People here fellated log horizon because the author actually posted here once and did a Q&A session.
Now he is in prison for evading taxes(twice)

To play devil's advocate it's hard to do that when the make up a big chunk of what's airing every year.

That's a sad story. LH isn't too bad for what it is, the problem is the fans talk it up higher than it really is.

>as soon the anime comes out it attracted all kind of cancer thanks to youtubers
Why are people like this? Is it because successful shows steal attention from the shows they like or something?

Everything that gets popular is bound to attract normalfags user.

I think it's just an easy thing to pick on because it's so fucking easy to spot low quality, they are mostly wish fulfillment, but the low quality one's play it straight and spell it out in the description. Loser gets super cheat power and becomes amazing.

>People called Log Horizon and Overlord SAO done right when they came out
Surface-level comparison that usually involves looking for "similar keywords" but have pretty much no substance. It's about as non-sensical as calling Hyouka as "Fate/stay night done right" due to both having a school, or calling One Piece as "Titanic done right" because both have a tragic scene of a ship sinking.
In other words, it's complete non-sense.
Also, if you look closer, SAO was initially all about "you die ingame, you die in reality", while Overlord and Log Horizon ran diametrically opposed to that, with Overlord introducing revival magic and revival items right off the bat, and Log Horizon having player respawn available. That alone should tell you all you need to know to make a judgement on the so-called "similarity" that doesn't exist.

>remembers trumpet scene

>SAO was the culmination of the "survival" boom of the late 2000s
Sword Art Online started in 2000, you dumb nigger. Almost an entire decade before shit like Btoom!. It wasn't the culmination of anything. "Trapped in a video game/cyberspace" was just a popular theme all throughout the 90s and early 00s. Although most of them were very isekai-ish stuff like Monster Rancher, Arcade Gamer Fubaki, NG Knight Lamune, or Digimon. I THINK Megami Tensei was the first to do it, but there could be something earlier. (then you can go back even further into stuff like Tron)

The only thing SAO really did was ground the genre in actual video game mechanics. (which was probably also done before) And yeah, it's very likely the reason so many modern isekai run under video game mechanics.

>so many modern isekai run under video game mechanics.
This is what killed the anime industry for me. Same with other genres like "slice-of-life" or even fighting manga having mobile game gacha references.

Attached: b00.png (539x377, 125.81K)

Or in other words, tropefags forcing comparisons that only make sense superficially but fall apart if you think about them.

>The only thing SAO really did was ground the genre in actual video game mechanics. (which was probably also done before)
Wrong, disgaea did it first
> And yeah, it's very likely the reason so many modern isekai run under video game mechanics.
Wrong, it was because of disgaea isekai fanfics

Disgaea was a video game adaption that sometimes referenced the mechanics from the game it was adapting for comedy (which dates all the way back to stuff like the 80s Pac-man cartoon).

>Maybe that's a reason why people claim that SAO started an isekai boom?
Nah. People claim that it started an isekai boom because it has some vaguely isekai elements and in the web novel to light novel to anime boom that followed, isekai ended up displacing battle school harems in popularity. The result is people looking back being able to tell that the modern isekai boom started after SAO and then misidentify SAO as the source of the genre, rather than it opening a door that isekai was most successful at taking advantage of.

>People claim that it started an isekai boom because ecelebs keep repeating it.

No, user. You can't blame everything on youtube.

Shit like this is hilarious because it outs pseudo intellectual "historians" as the animeonly garbage they are.

What do we learn from this thread? Searching for that one source of a genre is pointless. It's more like there is a zeitgeist or multiple sources for a genre or the boom of a genre.

This. All of the modern narou isekai series have fanfiction tier writing because it came from a small niche.
It's mindboggling how that niche has become mainstream and got shoved down our throat every season now. Look at this season's anime list and it's heartwrenching.
I don't have any qualms with narou isekai if they only have one or two shows to satisfy their niche, but everyone and their grandma wants to purposely downgrade themselves and write isekai nowadays and steer the industry to a direction none of us wanted

Ashita no Joe fucked up the industry by setting a tone of long, boring, slow paced anime that's only good for 2 minute snippets to save money

Re:Zero makes a lot more sense if you read it as if it were written by someone who just really wanted to see Saito end up with Henriette.

An SAO thread? Did I transport back to 2013?

upvoted kind sir xd

People hated the fairy dance arc but i liked it a lot, the visuals were beatiful, the ost was spectacular and it gave way more mmos vibes than the first arc, yet is despised by people!

Attached: 1648503436855.png (969x586, 588.23K)

>Black Knight
lmao

Isekais very rarely gets finished
Even Inuyasha is now invalid as finished isekai due to the new Anime sequel

Fairy arc was great, miles better than GGO. GGO was really lacking in action and Shion was (is) a shit character.

>sao
>isekai
Isekai haters are the most sub human faggots out there

So here's the floor map, of Floor 5.

This is the floor for scherzo of an Abyssal Dusk.

Youtubers irrationally shitting on the butchered anime adaptation like some cinemasins wannabees forever tainted discussion about SAO.
While I can't shill it as the best thing ever, it's definitively above average, especially by the point it reaches the alice arcs.
She may be shit and one note but her VR design makes people's penises hard which is all ironic weebs care about.

>youtube.com/watch?v=d5TiRc01Ww4

Now where on that map do you see space for a evil horse?
