Do smartphones not exist in Ran's time period or does the story take place in the early 2000s before the iPhone became available for sale?

I thought Otaro was incapable of feeling afraid but now he acts like he is inside a horror movie

Didn't these insects give Ran's mother trouble for the past 20 years yet Ran is treating all these insects as fodder?

A magical family like there's is probably pretty outdated tech-wise.

The only thing he can't feel is love.

They are in a dreamscape, to be fair.
