Take this scene for example. Goku is pretending to be retarded as usual, and Beerus has had enough. Realizing that he is a genuine menace to the stability of U7, he threatens to Hakai him. Goku INSTANTLY drops the "retard" act because now it's his own life that is at stakes, not anyone elses (who he doesn't care about) and shows a very serious face.

I like them because they all feel like different characters. Buu tried to do the same thing but the only real difference was Fat Buu and Super Buu, and only because Super Buu was more articulate. Beyond that, they were all basically the same. Cell's personality and way of doing things changed drastically between all his forms.

That's actually something that I like about Buu, even though he went through so many crazy transformations he still had the same personality. I guess it helped that I enjoyed that personality, Buu is one of the funniest characters in DB.

Super Buu is easily one of my favorite antagonists because he was just so fucking insane and it was scary. The scream when he inflated the gunman until he exploded, the Human Extinction Attack, the way he looked at Gohan right before he self-destructed, the fact that he got so pissed about being trapped in the RoSaT that he screamed hard enough to rip a hole in spacetime. Dude really was a chaotic force of nature.

The first time I watched DBZ it was all so fucked up, he honestly scared me more than Cell did. Having rewatched/reread it multiple times over the years, though, it's all so funny to me.

Wrong, with Raditz je was worried that he couldn't save Gohan. With Cell he knew that he didn't have the time to surpass Cell so he relied on Gohan, that backfired on him. Goku doesn't particularly care about his life.

Is this not the perfect motivation for the final antagonist of the Android arc? The Z-fighters spent the entire manga fighting for the sake of fighting, and training to improve their own strength. Cell's power is the power of the Z-fighters that he took for himself. So why should he not take their motive for himself? Fighting for the sake of fighting, and proving his strength.
And so Cell suffers a fitting end at the hands of Goku's son. He never enjoyed fighting and didn't want to do it at all but still fought to defeat evil, with his final blast aided by all of the Z-fighters and the ghost of his dead father.
Holy fucking SHIT, Toriyama-sensei is truly a genius. The Cell arc is a literary masterpiece.

The Buu arc is optional comedic add-on content. It gave us a cool villain and fusions but is ultimately superfluous.

Cell is the personification of what Roshi feared his students plus Tenshinhan and Chaozu would become had they not been humbled in the 天下てんか一いち武ぶ道どう会かい, Tenka'ichi Budōkai; lit. "The Number One Under Heaven Martial Arts Gathering". Goku always lost in the tournaments which gave him the drive to improve himself even more, Yamcha and Krillin had Goku as their ultimate goal. Tenshinhan and chaozu were trained to become assasinas and fought dirty even after Yamcha was knocked out Tenshinhan broke his leg possibly Killing his career as a fighter at the time. Roshi was able to get through him and change his mind because someone like Shen was wasting his talents, after the 22nd Budokai his eyes were opened by seeing the flaws of his teachings and later conceded that Goku was the overall superior fighter in the finals and that he wanted a rematch. Cell was never humbled like the others and didn't have a teacher/Role model like Roshi who could set him straight, his fight against SS2 Gohan proves that he fights for the thrill of it rather than seeing it as a sport. Thus, he lacks any honor. It's interesting to note that around the Cell games someone like Mr Satan arrived a Person like Cell that also doesn't fight for the sport but rather uses fighting as a tool to make himself more famous. Later Tenkaichi Budokai's doesn't feature real martial artist anymore the old announcer comments on it when he sees Goku and the others again the one place where Super Humans used to compete every 3 years is now a place of entertainment to please people worldwide. Cell was an end of an Era of real martial artists the ones we used to see a long time ago even Goku the boy who saved everyone from Daimao is forgotten by the public. regulars like the humans and Piccolo are also not remembered anymore Videl had to search for Goku's name to know who he even was because names like that aren't common knowledge amongst current martial artists anymore.

A fighter being stronger than Cell in his Perfect form is something he can't fathom nor comprehend because that means his chase to Perfection was a lie and meaningless in the long run. Cell lives in the present not future. in his eyes there is nothing more to gain in power contrast this to Goku and the others who know they will never truly be Number one and know there will be a new challenge for them in the future or some big enemy will attack them, which is why some of them train/prepare for that day unlike Cell who truly believes that he is the pinnacle of everything, and believes wholeheartedly what Gero and his computer said to him about him being the perfect lifeform and promising him unrivaled Power. SS2 Gohan was that reminder that a powerful warrior surpassing your previous enemies could appear at any given moment something Cell doesn't believe in, This is why I like that he is dead forever because I highly doubt he could ever live with the fact that his "Perfect" form was nothing more of a power boost that could be surpassed as we see with Gohan much like the Super Saiyan form which was thought to be a legend for hundreds of years and was later left behind by the saiyans so they could reach new heights of power instead of stagnating like Cell. Roshi trained Goku and Krillin to use their martial arts to help the people in need when a new threat arrives and give them hope. Cell actively wants to spread dispair and fear to everyone with his marital arts he even made the Tenkaichi Budokai (Cell games) into a death battle arena rather than a place of testing your strength against the worlds best.

Huh? The OG series is great. The way it slowly develops from farcical comedy to serious action is truly done in a masterful manner. Seeing how the series changes gives you a true appreciation of the later "Z" chapters.
The Buu arc is optional add-on content because it doesn't follow the pacing of the rest of the series. Every DB arc, prior to Buu, was more serious than the previous. But the Buu arc regresses into the gag comedy of early chapters rather than continuing to develop the series.
