Really wish more eroge/VNs tried to do this. It's either standalone works or the ones that do have a continuous storyline usually end in 3-4 games. I can't think of any story-focused H-series that have been going on for over a decade with the same protag other than maybe MGQ

It's just difficult to create a massive series in an industry that's been decentralized since like the 80s. No big publishers have absolute control over the market, there's a few big names that get chart topping sales whenever they release, but for the most part there's so much doujin and small scale eroge and so many marketplaces for it that big publishers have some serious competition. On top of that it's not an industry that values gameplay or story, most of the chart topping eroge are character and H scene driven, so unless you're constantly adding new characters and scenarios most eroge players would get tired after the first few iterations, typically it's better to just make a new game with an entirely new setting. I think Rance was special because it got popular during the rpg boom and just before indie pc98 eroge exploded, and the studio was able to invest pretty heavily in its later releases. Because Rance games are so involved they had huge productions, that AS was only really able to fund because they had made so much money off the earlier games already
