Most of anime are shallow entertainment on par with marvel superhero shows. Lain is more relevant to the deterioration of the human experience now than ever. Anime has been on a downward trajectory appealing the to the lowest common denominator desiring escapism in the form of isekai and slice of life.
Lain is the antithesis of these things, true to reality, and therefore the best.
>NO, I DON'T WANT THAT! ARISU FINDING ANOTHER FRIEND...?! I WANT HER TO THINK ABOUT ME AND NO ONE ELSE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE! EVEN AFTER I DIE... I WANT TO BE AT THE FRONT OF HER MIND FOR A WHILE! TEN YEARS, AT LEAST!!
I recognize Lain as among the most arful anime ever made. However, you are a fool to think that it is that deep
Lain's philosophy is literally just the boomers being afraid of the growth of the internet. From the "dot com bubble" to pornography, up to the laws that were passed trying to control the flow of information
Lain is really all about that. Boomers are wide aware that life is changing fast and they cannot adapt - even up to this day. Boomers are still techno illiterate
Millenials and Zoomers have no problem sharing memes, though as we grew on the same world
It's definitely more about the disconnect between online activity and real life actualization than a fear of technology. There's a reason suicide rates for youth have skyrocketed. Studies show people younger than 10 years old are thinking about killing themselves because they don't get enough meaningless likes and friends on their favourite dopamine addiction fostering social media websites. It's an epidemic and it's only getting worse.

It is not an insult, mate Lainis a great and arful show that deserves more merits but I wouldn't call it revolutionary and life-changing
There is deeper discussion on shows like Casshern, Sora no Woto, Aria, Girls Last Tour, Made in Abyss
Heck, Housei no Kumi is a show that is blatantly all about Buddhist philosophy
The internet both controls reality and fake identities are everywhere. The line between real and fiction is completely blurred now so Lain is on the money.
Christian Evans
>Aria >Girls Last Tour >Made in Abyss >deep user...
Dominic Nguyen
YES! Girls Last Tour's author is a major in literature and the entire show was about Nihilism
Aria is the pinacle of Iyashikei Made in Abyss is stunning fantasy show Haibane Renmei is about the philosophies that land souls in purgatory Shinsekai no Yori is about mass paranoia
Heck, Kemono Friends is widely applauded for teaching the value of being different and that death is just around the corner in a way that is completely Child-friendly
>Girls Last Tour's author is a major in literature and the entire show was about Nihilism Broo what if nothing meant anything... woah....

Not an argument. If nihilism is such a deep concept why do you care about anything at all it's meaningless garbage, nihilism is literally just the first step to developing an actual worldview, it's a blank page where nothing has been written yet and not interesting in the least
>Girls Last Tour was about Nihilism Lain is about the rampant growth of technology and the many of the dangers that would be associated with it.
I don't understand your point. What makes something "deep" to you? Just being about Nihilism doesn't inherently make it deep. Neither does just inherently being about technology.
Parker Sanchez
Volumes were written Academic debates were held Major part of philosophy for a hundred year now Studied even up to political science
And then some faggot who never opened a single page would say this
Dunning Kruger. Absolute dunning-kruger confidence right here
Girls last tour is not really all just about the meaninglessness of their struggles, it's also about accepting death with a smile and working out a way to make the time worthwhile
Ryder Morgan
Existentialism is the only thing debated, nihilism is literally
Chase Thompson
Sure, whatever. At least you used google this time.
Read the wiki page at the very least next time

>noooooo this show about 14yo anime girls is actually super deep because nihilism >accuses me of reading wikipedia to form my views of philosophy ok
I have, but my point was that you could boil any show down to its base elements if you wanted to.
Each episode of Lain has distinct themes and messages in the same way GLT does. Which one you prefer more is up to personal preference (likely what you find more important in life). I'm a spiritualist but have tussled with the ideas of classical nihilism quite a bit, however I find myself more concerned with the future of society under such superficial pleasures and the psychological impact of technology (as well as just enjoying the aesthetic of Lain more).
Ryder Price
Let's be real Lain is just all about the fears and anxieties brought about by the virtual realm. Nothing more
It have absolute 0 discussion on its actual real world events that are completely evident and trends regularly because it was made 20 years too early.
It just a warning call for what is about to come - people falling into God complex in the virtual world while living the real world as absolute weirdos. No real climax or conclusion because it really cannot provide it, yet.
GLT uses literary material that has been debated for a hundred years and had a rich enviromental storytelling.
I praise Lain but it is just completely lacking because it tried to discuss a topic that is too new and understudied for its time
I don't see how lain made today making direct references to shit like facebook instagram or tiktok would make it in any way better
Jackson Flores
>if it doesn’t discuss real world events it isn’t good What a retard brainlet
Charles Murphy
>I praise Lain but it is just completely lacking because it tried to discuss a topic that is too new and understudied for its time shouldn't that be impressive?
People sacrificing their lives to the virtual world Having god complex brought about by being anonymous And conspiracy theories that made Soccer moms cry out for control of information Fuck, first episode was the father looking at a Neon site that is clearly a pornsite.
If Lain was made today, it would so MUCH more fruitful
Lain would involve discussions about clout chasing, cyber bullying, Doom Scrolling, echo chamber philosophy, health risks and so much more
The internet is now heavily studied and I expect actions would be done in the near future to prevent reckless behavior. Just like cigar laws and helmet laws. (Hell, electricity was bare copper wires until laws were passed in the 90s demanding safety like coating wires in plastic and installing circuit breakers )
Most certainly. But it was just made too early Compare it with Paprika for example which now have a clearer picture of what the internet's true shape is.
Congratulations, you manage to get it totally wrong. Not the meaning of the anime, of course, but the cultural context. Don't you forget about something? You know, another generation between boomers and millenials? Generation that create the early interner counterculture but was too bitter and too cynical (and already full of yuppies and Karens) to believe in the optimistic Millennium crap (not millenials, they were still childrens, but Millennium).
If you want to understand this time, check Ok Computer. That cold, paranoidal neo-prog weirdness was really popular (I learned the tape by heart and still remember every sound) because it's captured the zeitgeist of the late nineties. And SEL did the same in different media.
SEL was not made by tex illiterate boomers who was afraid of the dot com bubble because of crash. It's was made by internet freaks who hated dot com bubble before crash. You should read Cyberia to understand context.
fiction is inherently escapism and autists get so angry when you point this out yes most good works are less blatant and cover it all up with fancy language and deep themes but at the end of the day great fiction can be used as escapist fodder just like low tier stuff the act of consumption is escapist you are allowing yourself to be distracted for X amount of time of the day all this drawing lines in the sand and dressing up your media consooming as "interacting with the great works" when it's cope
Bentley Nelson
>still doesn't understand true danger of the internet
Adrian Scott
Head back to your isekai general. Brainlet
We are discussing history, culture, and philosophis here

>present day kek, present time >LMAO

Lain predicted the psychology of the internet, theres no need to guess at everything if you understand the mentality and psychology of the residents of the internet. Also, Lain is based on literary works, so not sure what argument you're making.
Caleb Long
Imagine if Lain was made today
We would have an entire episode streak of depressed kids trying cope with their reality by chasing clout - even if it meant actually showing off your body and making yourself unemployable. Just for those likes and praises from people you do not know
People who would also gladly hound on you just because seeing you react gives them entertainment
Fuck, maybe make even segments about men who are also suffering from the same depression and need for validation, they resorted to the shallowest forms of entertainment just to numb the pain of self-loathing. Retreating entirely to escapism so hard, they unironically believe that it is good, and everyone else are worse losers than them
(This game hit hard in critisizing the internet culture)
lain aged really poorly. you could probably find what it does better in a book or film. since the bar for anime is extremely low as OP points out, stuff that's just a tiny bit above mediocrity gets praised as the best. this is why anyone who's well read and versed in the arts thinks anime is a laughable medium artistically and intellectually, stuff like EVA is a joke and juvenile to most people who didn't grow up with anime or are into anime and all of its dumb contrived writing and tropes. anime has been doomed to have no merit since the otaku ruined it for everyone in the 80s.
Brandon Fisher
Please do not associate Lain with that FOTM discord garbage ever again
Isaac Rodriguez
You're unironically a huge midwit, user. Yes, Lain doesnt have cloutchasing, so what? No work needs to show the entirety of its setting. Something like Paprika, which you mentioned, didnt show the idea of the internet acting like a second subconscious, manipulating information to fit narratives and erasing facts entirely. Luckily, it doesnt need to, just like Lain doesnt need to show clout chasing.
Adrian Jenkins
>falling in love with a jewish girl
Jeremiah Cook
>clout chasing, cyber bullying, Doom Scrolling, echo chamber philosophy, health risks and so much more It has every one of those things but you’re too dumb to realise because it chose to represent them in surreal forms. You’re like those Redditors who make idiotic kitsch art which beat you in the face with its topic
Lucas Long
lol no it didn't You are just looking at Tofu and calling it the meaning of life
Gabriel Collins
Japan is the home of vtubers Porn is absolutely everywhere
Suffering heavily in lack of children right now
They better discuss the taboos as soon as possible
