What the FUCK is wrong with translators?

What the FUCK is wrong with translators?
Why do they insert shitty western memes into subs?
This shit doesn't age well and is unprofessional

Get off the internet grandad

It's not their fault you're terminally online, "sus" has caught on and is part of normal vocabulary.

>unprofessional
that's why. anyone with any sort of education wouldn't be translating japanese anime/games for breadcrumbs.

No its not faggot
You are terminally online if you think people use sus in normal conversation

>Streamer

fr i fnd tht sht sus desu

>insert popular meme into subs
>someone posts about it
>your page gets more pageviews
We live in the era of attention. Attention and outrage sadly outweigh being genuine.

To be woke, unironically. Inserting contemporary colloquialisms into translations is pretty obviously unprofessional, but since this sort of zoomspeak is pseudo-AAVE / AAVE adjacent, when the translator considers whether to use it or not they fight the impulse to say "no" because they think they're just being racist

>streaming

This thread has to be a raid. Literally every post is fucking awful.

The eighth post is correct though.

everytime you use translation done by others, you're not getting the original meaning. Learn japanese and watch raws or fuck off

What kind of bumfuck middle of nowhere shithole do you live in if you don't hear people using sus in normal conversation

I don't want a letter by my isp

Go outside.

Sorry but i have never seen anyone use the term sus unless they know about the meme and are referencing it as a joke
its not used in casual conversation.

>he don't be sussing with his broskis
how's the 80s grandpa

Depends, it's gay but I can tolerate it if that's at least the equivalent to how the character talks. It's the absolute worst when a translator adds shit that's completely ooc to say

Probably one with people over the age of 21.

Languages cannot be translated perfectly, especially completely unrelated ones like Japanese and English. This makes it so that when a translator is translating, they have to decide what is more important, preserving the exact meaning and sounding awkward or trying to preserve the feeling of the dialogue but potentially changing the exact meaning. The first is what fansubs normally do and works best if the viewer is vaguely familiar with the source language while professional translations tend to go with the later which works best with the general public. This is the case of the latter where the speaking is probably talking casually like a teenager, so they tried to mimic what a teenager might say in English.

depends on your native language, age, available time, and dedication. Try leaving on any japanese speaking medium on the side as you do daily tasks to get familiar first. Took me about 3 months of self-learning to be able to read manga with a dictionary by me and about 2 years to fully understand radio shows and variety tv.

Different user but I don't hang out with zoomers

My native language is english and age is 21
>Took me about 3 months of self-learning to be able to read manga with a dictionary
Thats kind of impressive. How much time did you dedicate to it per day?

>This is the case of the latter where the speaking is probably talking casually like a teenager, so they tried to mimic what a teenager might say in English.
Thats your assumption fag
its possible they were just using normal words
Also the "general public" doesn't watch shows like this

Sus is used since the 1920s: merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/what-does-sus-mean

fuck I remember there was a vid of a fucking naruto jounin exam fight with shitty subtitles with memes here and there, no zoomer retardspeak but good old
>all your base are belong to us
and such and I can't fucking find it
anyone??

Not that user, and I am impressed, but out of those things you didn't account for the possibility of someone having a learning disability. We can't all learn at the same pace.

"Official" subtitlers have the same problem as dubbers. They literally have no relevancy except appealing to a small group of people who don't know or care about fansubs. And that small population actively wants the product to be altered. If they didn't, they'd just go find some fansubs which are better quality and free. It's a form of soft censorship to keep their dwindling base loyal to them.

On top of this, 'official' fansubs will often get replaced 5-10 years later once another company licenses the product. Or when the show gets a rerelease. Or many other circumstances. So they expect their subs are not going to age. Subbers (and dubbers) back in the 90s and early 2000s didn't expect the popularity of anime would last even a decade later. They were making a low quality product for a niche audience. And so they threw in a bunch of dated terms and jokes aimed at the lowest common denominator of their time. The practice just never changed. Over 20 years later and western subs/dubs are doing the same shit they've always done. And with many of the same dub voice actors and subbing leads doing it.

>post war linguo
when will we see subs using nigger again?

>They literally have no relevancy except appealing to a small group of people who don't know or care about fansubs
But most people probably watch anime on streaming sites, and streaming sites these days seem to be ripping official subs rather than fan subs.
As for the rest of the post, i can see what you are talking about but i still dislike this practice. I think its unprofessional. I'm betting these guys don't get paid much

wow that's fucked up why is this boy getting his face stapled with a stapler???

>Streaming

Thats marisa, a girl

It's debatable if most people are watching streaming sites. Unless you mean those free ones. People are running away from Crunchyroll, for good reason. And Crunchyroll has to use official subs because they're licensing from those companies or own it themselves. The other streaming sites usually are just stealing from Crunchyroll or fansub releases.

>Unless you mean those free ones.
Yes, thats what i mean

my dude, japanime dubs today are totally CRACKED and these shows are ON FIRE.

>streaming

Monkey speak.

Saizen uses Faggot and Retard all the time. I don't know about Nigger though.

oh right it's from this image
dat 2013 feel

I didn't know that it was an edit

If these subtitles were for a show that was airing in, say, 2010, would it still be memespeak?

it is, the original image i posted is from this guy pixiv.net/en/users/27152
unfortunately that image doesn't seem to exist anywhere anymore
funnily enough this picture is from him also

If it was a shitty subber, yes. These kinds of things were being done all the way back in the earliest subs/dubs in the 1970s.

ah, sorry, i meant to say official subs.

this season i went back to waiting for fansubs or b-global subs which are less bad.

Your isp literally doesn't care about chinese cartoons. I've been torrenting anime for close to two decades on multiple different isps and have never heard a single peep from them. Vidya is a different story though.

My friend got throttled for downloading anime back in the early 2000s. But even then, they did it because he was downloading too much. Not specifically because of what he was downloading. And if ISPs aren't going to block people for looking at porn, I doubt they'll bother with anime.

A lot of "pro" translators are basically fansubbers without any education in translation who aren't even fluent in Japanese. TL quality standards are very low for entertainment media, so companies like CR don't care about hiring people who are actually competent at translating, they just get whoever is willing to work for peanuts.

And by their nature of being translations, they aim for people who don't care about the original Japanese. So they figure they can change stuff and people won't notice or care. Sadly, they're right. There's still people who go around claiming official subs/dubs are 'improving' the original Japanese.

Because it's what you deserve.

>why is this teenage character talking like a teenager?!

That's not how Japanese teenagers talk. "Localizing" speech into another language adds a whole new level of cringe. And can actively hurt the product. See Squall in Final Fantasy VIII.
