Fumoffu is just slapstick comedy. pretty funny. Second Raid and IV are more serious, almost like a war drama. I liked them better than the first seasons but others not so much because they felt different. Since you don't seem too fond of the first one, you might like the serious tone of the others.

Almost through another rewatch. IV is good on a rewatch, slightly marred by the memory of the problems it had on release. Fumoffu is still fantastic, but TSR really doesn't hold up nearly as well. I appreciate the filler arc in Helmajistan more with each watch, absolutely the one of the best non canon arcs in anime.

I can't stand edgelord villains in anime, so the scene with Tessa absolutely hauling off on her brother single-handedly made the whole season worth it for me. What a great scene.

Perhaps good is a bit of an exaggeration, but it's perfectly serviceable, and considering the situation, XEBEC did a very commendable job. Most of the AS CGI is pretty well done, and while there are a bunch of animation errors they mostly get fixed in the bluray. The two recaps are quite bad, but the actual pace of the episodes is decent. Who knows, maybe I'm just making excuses for a series that I still quite enjoy, even if it really doesn't hold up as well in the modern times. The best thing about IV was the confirmation that Tessa is best girl, judging by the amount of merch she got

The mech fights have always been the weakest part of FMP, abandoning the SoL to focus on that was an enormous misstep. Throw in some truly cringeworthy episodes about Tessa, who was already the cringiest character, and some pointless filler with Sosuke, and it works out to an incoherent mess.
