I get it that it sells good pre-anime, but not THAT THAT THAT good. Impressive for a romcom but not groundbreaking. Kaguya and toubun sold better and neither got two cours instantly. It's not even the plot or the characters. They just bank on this blowing up from the toubun leftovers and Nisekoi rememberers.

toubun didn't sell that well right until it got anime adaptation which was announced just a month before its vol 6 got released, then winter 2019 came when the anime got aired which immediately shot up its sales for both vol 7 and 8 as shown by this pic.
meanwhile cuckoo since it's vol 3 already reached 100k in its first full month and has been very consistent of getting at least 100k in its first full month for every volume that came after that. with the peak was at vol 6 with 140k sales in its first full month.
I can see why they went an extra mile to adapt this thing. people may not notice this but Cuckoo on its first few months of serialization broke some records like getting the fastest cover in WSM, and also for its 1st vol, it got reprinted for 4 consecutive weeks which was the first for Kodansha in 21st century.
the people who handle the anime prolly are banking to the fact that the anime will only show the part where cuckoos' story were actually interesting enough to fool people to buy the manga before knowing it genuinely went nowhere after the story not covered by the anime.
