Stone oven style pizza restaurants do exist in Japan, but they are far behind the big-cap American pizza chains. It is hopeless for Italian-style pizza to become mainstream in Japan in the future.
Then again, the livestock industry groups have a lot of political power in Japan, and there is little hope for a decline in cheese prices in the future. Pizza is not something that people come all the way from abroad to eat in Japan. Japanese people do not eat sushi willingly in foreign countries either. The price is many times higher than in Japan, and it is all salmon and tuna.
