The usual argument was that it was popular in the west but didn't sell that much.

I don't remember anyone blaming Murata when the Phoenix man and Amai mask redraws were happening. People assumed it was ONE because there was no reason yet to assume Murata was affecting the story that much.
That changed relatively recently actually, because the manga doesn't even resemble the webcomic anymore and even simple jokes from the webcomic are entirely bastardized by someone who obviously has no idea why they worked in the first place.

Of course that could very well be ONE himself just getting out of touch, but it's a lot more reasonable to assume that it's Murata and he has no idea what he's doing.

People have been blaming Murata since the martial art tournament.
As far as I'm concerned, ONE puts his name on the cover so he's responsible. Either his writing has become mediocre, or he doesn't give a shit and Murata (who he's not a writer, by the way) has to improvise. In both cases he's at fault.

We don't really know what's happening behind the scenes so it's difficult to put one or the other to blame.
Maybe Murata has always wanted to do his own thing and ONE has been keeping him on a leash, but eventually he got sick of doing that.
Or maybe ONE just got lazy, said fuck it, and stopped doing drafts so Murata has no clue what to do.
Who the fuck knows.

It's gonna be the final season, and i do think it's a pretty satisfying ending to the series.
There's no random new villains introduced at the end, and there's not even anything that could technically be called a "fight" really. It's kinda weird trying to explain it without giving any spoilers.
Not sure if it could top season 2, but it's gonna be pretty good still.

This is why it's difficult to believe that ONE is even writing the manga anymore.

The community nowadays is more so something resembling two rival communities created by the sheer amount of differences between the current manga and the webcomic. Hence, a general opinion of the series can't really be solidified, because more so than any other thread, the OPM threads are a pendulum. The dynamic of "manga vs webcomic" is far too set in stone.
I think it would be an interesting exercise to analyse the OPM community on Yea Forums itself and compare it to other popular threads, but it is going to be excruciatingly tedious.
