Kenrantaru Grande Scene volume 19

Chapter 95 - A Different World

Previous: Kanade's group finished up to great applause from the crowd. Nanami's group was up next and while Kanade was amazed at how she danced, she noticed something off, as if Nanami wasn't enjoying it or showing real emotion. The results of the competition were announced and in Kanade's age group (grades 10-11), there was a tie for first between both Keira's and Toby's entries to everyone's excitement.

Later on, Kanade excitedly talked to Shouko over the phone who was disappointed that Kanade wasn't going to be returning back to Japan over Christmas break. They talked about different things like their schools' locations and Shouko getting more lessons in contemporary, as well as their desire to perform together again. Kanade was happy that Shouko sounded in much better spirits now but still lamented at not having seen her in so long given that they more or less grew up together.

That same night, she went to practice by herself and came across Nanami practicing her competition choreography. Nanami wanted Kanade to be honest about what she thought of her performance. After getting it, she admitted that because she's so self-conscious about speaking English, she has trouble really connecting with others and instead largely keeps to herself. She expressed a desire to be more outgoing and fearless like Kanade and Kanade encouraged her to try practicing with her partner some more since Kanade knows that she's good and wants to see Nanami performing at her best.

Generally I don't really try and comment on the girls' appearances but Nanami's ass is amazing.

I imagine it's not popular enough and Champion always seems to be very reserved about what of their stuff gets adapted. Also, how do you cast it? Language and communication is a huge part of the series so I'd hate to see, for example, all the characters speaking Japanese and you just go "oh, it's totally English or German" since it'd make, say, the scene between Kanade and Li during the YAGP where they have to communicate in Engrish completely nonsensical otherwise.

Like you'd have to cast native speakers for each role and then for the Japanese characters, VAs who can also speak English to at least some degree. Especially for Kanade.

Like take Nanami's issue. It revolves entirely around her lack of confidence in her English which has made her so self-conscious that she's withdrawn and focused mostly on herself which in turn has caused others to perceive her as being an aloof loner which then played into why her group did poorly.

Obviously that doesn't work if everyone's speaking the same language.

That's it for today. Next time, another day out on the town with Abby. Also, checking in with Ema.

cute kennedys

And rotoscope it?

just let it go josh

Nigga I just want to see cute japanese girls dancing to classical music framed in a beautiful way by a talented photographer. Casting can be done if you are not too anal about it, and it could be done, you think they can't teach some random girl to speak a couple foreign lines?
I'd prefer live action, I don't think rotoscoping would benefit the parts of the movie that aren't dancing scenes.

It could be a mistake but with Kanade it actually makes sense to chalk things like that up to her being an ESL.

If the series ever made it up to the point where she's in England it's going to be way more than "a few lines". To say nothing of characters like Abby who are around for the whole series and don't speak Japanese at all.

The lines in the manga are in japanese, right? Just put a big ol disclaimer that they're talking another language.

No one would care what language they speak, when you read the manga they don't speak either of their native languages, you read it in english and call it a day. It'd be a nice touch if they do some native lines to their character from time to time, but them speaking japanese as default would hurt nobody. I don't know why you are making such a big deal about this as if it couldn't be done.

You don't need to do anything, the implication that they are speaking another language is enough for most viewers. It's like caring about which notes they play in a piano scene.

For me, it's that the communication and language aspect and how dance can break through those barriers is such a core part of the series. I'm aware it's something 99% of people wouldn't care about.

Fair point, I still think it could be conveyed through key scenes and subtle dialog sequences. Could be done and it'd be a nice theme for the show/movie.

I guess it's all moot because the only way this gets an anime is if Dance Dance Danseur does well enough to create the idea that there's a market for more ballet anime.

Bumping

What even are the manga sales looking like for Kenrantaru? It feels unpopular, but it's still been going on for like 8 years.

I honestly don't know since I don't really know the best place to go looking for Oricon numbers. I would assume not terribly high it's also published in Champion Red so the sales expectations might not be as lofty. Also, Champion seems to be a bit more supportive of its series. I never would've expected Ippon Again (which I assume also isn't a big seller) to get an anime yet it's getting one.

bump

I always get a bad feeling when Abigail is around. Does this happen to any of you as well?

I assume you're supposed to. Not that Abby's a bar person but she's probably not the right mentor for Kanade. It seems to be pretty consistent with the fact that as much as she loves it, the Royal Ballet won't be the school for Kanade and that it's probably better for her to go to a school with a wider variety in what's taught. Probably something like American Ballet Theatre given that she can speak at least converaational English.

Nice hat.
