Canon?

Long time Yea Forums poster reporting in.

Is there an agreed upon canon for Anime films and TV series? Or something similar to the Sight and Sound poll for films? Anime hasn't been around as long as film and hasn't made the same sort of academic inroads film has, so I'm unclear if this exists.

Thanks!

There.

Why? For wanting to learn more about anime and exploring the best anime has to offer?

what do you mean by canon?

>following shitty charts instead of finding things that interest you

>charts are not ways to find things that interest you

A list of works considered to be permanently established as being of the highest quality.

They're ways to be brainwashed into thinking that there's nothing worthwhile if it's not on a chart.

There's a difference between topic charts like pic related and what the OP is asking, which is essentially a "best anime of all time" list.

Boku no Pico
Bible Black
Night Shift Nurses

Start with reading Gantz and Platinum End, everything else will follow.

Sounds like projecting
Yes, but I donĀ“t see the problem with a list of anime that are usually considered to be the best of all time

no there isn't, anime list are usually separated by genre, as you said there still isn't a defined metric to evaluate anime or animation in general
and thankfully in my opinion, I think it would just become westernized, like the movie world that barely considers stuff outside of america's tastes

So if there is no established canon, can I simply come here and say "I like these, what else might I like'? Or should I take that to /wsr/?

>Is there an agreed upon canon for Anime films and TV series?
I don't think so
Maybe in japan? I don't speak japanese so there's no way for me to know
I have plenty of rec charts if you want any

>Is there an agreed upon canon for Anime films and TV series?
No.

The latter. Don't worry, some anons here also go to that board.

you should probably go to /wsr/, you would be send there regardless

This is great. Thank you. :)

...

Recommendation threads belong on /wsr/ yes. What you'd get out of anime largely depends on your tastes. Figure out what your tastes are, learn which creators are responsible for creating the type of thing you like.

I'd figure it would be the same for film but you seem to suggest that is not the case with some sort of objective must watch list existing you keep going on about.

I do follow specific filmmakers, but I also appreciate 'best of' lists because they force me to explore films I may not have otherwise. I generally find that if something is well made, I will enjoy it, even if its outside my typical areas of interest. There are exceptions, of course.

You can also go on the MAL page of the show to look at stuff that might be similar in the recommendations section
also there might be indirect ways of asking for recommendations on Yea Forums as well
3x3 threads are an example. You could also ask a question like "How do we rank the anime this season" etc
I don't get why they don't let us ask for recommendations. The other media boards are allowed
i have a bunch of these saved over the years
Have another one

Yea Forums used to make charts but I think that has largely fallen out of fashion since the 2010's newfag booms and you will probably not find an up to date or actively maintained chart unless it exists on some wiki. Either way blatant request threads are generally deleted and ban material but if this thread is still up when I get home I have a pile or old chart jpgs I collected over the years like the ones anons have already shared.

horrible fucking charts

Curious to hear what series you have in mind that isn't somehow already included in those charts, or what is included that invalidates anything.

Correct, I've seen a great deal of the movies listed in and by and large, they're all terrible, pretentious, cliche-ridden, overrated tripe

Because it creates bad posters. Anyone could lurk Yea Forums for a bit and acquire second hand knowledge of any anime on those charts. Request threads are made by people who don't understand or care about Yea Forums culture, they just want to grab something fast like looters and disappear.
Yea Forums wasn't designed for this, the internet is vast, go to any other place that isn't here.

Most of these are suggestions given by the "Anime Is Valid Art Too!" crowd. They are mostly meaningless and lacking substance.

These charts aren't a bible or agreed upon canon btw
there are still plenty of shows here that you may not personally enjoy

Not really, there are plenty of anime on such charts that are never discussed here
i think its unfair
>Request threads are made by people who don't understand or care about Yea Forums culture
What do you even mean by that, lol

You'll never get it.

What IS this shit? Who watches this garbage?

I won't disagree there is lot of that on there, but nothing offensively pretentious, just artsy and maybe its up some peoples' alley. There are many slice of life comedy and action series recommended among them. The point isn't a ranking chart anyway, its just a starting point.

>obscure and artsy
>Jin Roh
>Tatami Galaxy
>Alien 9
>Angel's Egg
>Steamboy

boku no lurk moar

Its obscure anime
also,
>they just want to grab something fast like looters and disappear.
Why do you assume this? They could stick around if they actually know what to watch
To the contrary, If all they watch is mainstream anime that they see on other places they might be turned away from anime as a hobby

>Waaahhhh movie is long, black and white and not marvel

I didn't make it lol
Although some of those are probably obscure to normies

>normies

lmao bro relax
Your nitpicking isn't impressing anybody

>They could stick around if they actually know what to watch
People should find what they want to watch themselves instead of just following charts. Spamming charts is a good way to get people stuck on talking about the same shit, which is already a problem on Yea Forums with nobody wanting to actually form an opinion themselves.

Stop making and/or posting shit charts then.

That's is surface level board knowledge.

would you be happier if i said normalfag instead?

Op makes a request thread, someone posts a chart, OP says thanks and disappear.
There is no discussion involved. Anime on the chart are taken as absolute values, there's no room for personal taste. Why was one title on the chart rather than another? Nobody knows what were the thoughts of the person who compiled the chart.

I'd be happier if you lurked more.

This

Go the fuck back

Better.

Also, i forgot to mention, these are recommendation charts, ie a starting point, its not some sort of anime canon that is universally agreed upon, or a ranking list

You are replying to a 30 minutes old post, he's long gone.

Lol
Normally i always say normalfag but this time i said normie
i'm a 2018 newfag btw
If he has Yea Forums x he might still get the notifaction

Anons who have Yea Forums x installed are long past the time when they would need to make a request thread.

Not my point. It's just that who gives a shit about a three or four animes on a random obscure anime chart apparently not being "obscure enough".

My point still stands.
The fact you used the word animes is telling enough.

How long should i lurk then user sama

BEHOLD

Nope, still checking in. I just watched an episode of The Handmaid's Tale and now its time for a couple eps of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'll check in again before going to bed. :)

Also, several of the lists posted do not include Death Note. Is it not well regarded on Yea Forums?

The problem with attempting to establish a canon of this, is first to decide what format counts. If we limit ourselves to feature length films only, our choices are going to be the same 50 or so films everyone already knows about, even if they have never seen many of them. On the other hand, if we do not restrict ourselves by format/runtime/genre, we wind up with an overload of viable material, many of which are actually unfinished or incomplete.
What I would do (If I cared enough) would be to take a bunch of "good anime/manga" recomendation lists and start by sorting it out by length and completion. Keep ongoing projects in thier own category. Then, you have a good start to start arguing over which 100 long running 90s shonen series belong on your "canon."
