How was anything reconnected? The fruit gives his body the properties of rubber. Any further aspects of it only appear at the awakening stage, which is something incredibly hard to achieve.

It's the best selling manga because people are always aging into it and age out of it before they get to the part where it turns to shit. Alabasta starts at the end of Whiskey Peak, when they head to Alabasta. Enies' Lobby starts at the sea train, when they head to Enie's Lobby.

Notice how Enies' Lobby doesn't start when the entire crew arrives at Enies' Lobby, but when they start to go to Enies lobby even though half of them go there ahead of the others.
