Is common glass a good idea for display cabinet shelves?

If you have some skills working with your hands, it's possible to buy large pieces and cut your own glass shelves. All you need is a straight edge and a glass cutter--and a glass cutter is a handheld tool that scores the glass surface. You score the surface and then just snap it along the scored line.

Thanks, but I rather not, there are display cases made of non-tempered glass shelves near my area, but I'm not sure if they're sturdy enough given that detolfs ones are tempered afaik, also I'm worried about NTG spontaeusly breaking, btw I live in a zero earthquake area.

for one, tempering makes them far stringer, and second, safety, if the glass breaks it doesnt become a bunch of sharpen knives.

My mom has a display cabinet with normal glass shelves that are easily about 2 meters long. The corners are not even rounded. They've had glass and dishware, which I'm sure are far heavier than plastic figures, without issue for decades now. So I don't think tempered glass is absolutely necessary if you're worried about them breaking due to weight.
However I would agree that tempered glass is superior, out of safety concerns on shard size, in the case of the display windows or shelves breaking due to a sudden impact.

alright, the ones I was talking about in here are 5mm thick non-tempered, I wonder if they're sturdy enough for 3 - 4lb/shelf. because detolfs have a max load of 8lb/shelf, but they're made of safety glass which is supposed to be several times stronger.
