I don't even know which is the original and which are the spin offs. I'm pretty sure the one that comes to mind the easiest is the one where Ryoko was a dried up mummy sealed in a cave behind the temple and later blows up Tenchi's school. Is that the original?

That's OVA1, so yes. That series goes through all of the OVAs, Universe is it's own thing. GXP and War on Geminar are spinoffs of the original.
