The weirdest part was how they blended R rated moral lessons with middle school tier character interaction. It really makes you wonder who is controlling the writing room and have these people ever seen members of the opposite sex interact other than their abusive families or the sitcoms on tv? Perhaps the most glaring absence, not just in FMA but in most media products is characters chilling out and having a laugh at someone else's expense who is not a regular character on the show. The characters also are unusually standoffish of each other, again a problem in many, many media products. This leads me to believe the rumor that most writers are from broken homes and thus they don't have a good grasp of how stable friends and families interact.

EG: The scene in FMAB where Winry almost takes he shirt off, not realizing Ed is in the room and then screams like she's being attacked. The fear scream just feels very off for the situation. (It was hamfisted in to give the rest of the characters an excuse to run in with guns drawn.) Like the characters are middle schoolers who live in the suburbs and haven't so much as had to suffer more than a bad grade on a test. I think Ed and Winry would probably smile at each other and she might cry out in joy to see Ed still alive, then she would rush over and put her arms around him. In the get past the censors version. Real life young people who have had to grow up that fast are not often allowed to be behind closed doors without adult supervision due to raging infatuation.
