Mishima was no LARP. He was caught in between two civilizations with completely different values. Most of his childhood friends died in a war he was prohibited from participating due to his health. Everything which to him is virtue was not valued in the new post war society. He could not cope with it. I doubt he even wanted to start a 'coup'. But to give a really public statement of how shameful he thought the situation of Japan was. He died in a way which was honorable to the laws he felt were sacred.
