Hiking mountain biking camping kayaking usually pack a book with me to do all of these things

Have some artistic pursuits as well as physical ones. Mind and body. Personally, I dabble in photography and writing as well as go to the gym and go on hikes.

I like to keep myself busy throughout the week with hobbies with my buddies. On Tuesdays we play tennis. Wednesdays and Fridays we go rock-climbing. Thursdays we do yoga. On the weekends I like to check out new breweries. When I've got more free time I like to go canoeing, hiking and hammock-camping with my gal. Occasionally go to a concert or to the movies. It's a good life.
Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but I enjoy myself and I have fun.
Anyway, OP, there's nothing pathetic about reading. It's a good, cheap and rewarding hobby, and you shouldn't care what other people think, however you should always strive to diversify your experiences with new hobbies, especially ones that get your body moving.

Honestly this is the best response. I used to be friends with a guy I knew since high school (no longer in contact), where he would criticize reading and writing as feminine.
I tried to argue stuff about how people like Hemingway, lots journalists, and some of history's greatest authors were male, but the correct response really was to just say it in a firm way.
