it isn't necessary in any case. People call me an evil gatekeeper but I actually think the only thing you need to discuss a show genuinely is to have experienced it. Which in hunter x hunters case, it would depend on which version you're talking about. Obviously, though, unless you're discussing the dub specifically, if you haven't seen the sub or know japanese, you haven't watched the show in my view.

A good foundation in classic literature is helpful in regards to understanding all art though. And for a few anime who are rich with allusions, it definitely aids in understanding and, from my view, enjoyment.
