Without it being as good, I'm still into it enough to see if they explain the giant sky portals with a UFO inside. Or the biohorror zone that was growing around Lilith. And those Evas twisted to build more conventional machines out of them are neat. The movies are cool at least peripherally because of stuff that comes out about the show, returning creators talking about the production or previously unpublished concepts from 1995 that they're using now.
